Halifax cruise port car service is a simple idea with a few local wrinkles. The Seaport berths sit right on the harbour, the airport is a long way out of town, and the best shore days in Nova Scotia are not in Halifax at all. LimousineCanada.ca covers all three: the airport run, the ride to a hotel or to Pier 21, and private days by the hour to the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, the painted waterfront at Lunenburg or the vineyards around Wolfville.

How does a Halifax cruise port car service work?

Book on LimousineCanada.ca with your ship name, berth (Pier 20 or Pier 22 if you know it) and the time you expect to be ashore. A chauffeur meets you at the arranged point, loads your luggage and drives to the airport, a hotel or a sightseeing route. The booker shows the exact fare first.

Where the pickup happens depends on the pavilion and on how the ship is berthed that day, so we confirm the exact meeting point once the booking is in. Tell us the ship, the pier and your disembarkation time. If you are arriving by air to join a ship, flight tracking is included, and the free wait after landing is 60 minutes on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic ones. A name-board meet inside the arrivals hall is an add-on of $100 to $150, and child seats are free when you ask for them at booking.

The Halifax Seaport cruise berths: Pier 20, Pier 22 and the pavilions

According to the Port of Halifax, Piers 22 and 20 are the principal cruise berths, offering direct ship-to-shore access to the Port's dedicated passenger buildings, Pavilion 22 and Pavilion 20. Pier 23, where the Cunard Centre stands, and the Ocean Terminals at Piers 23 and 24 are also used for cruise traffic, and the Port notes shore-power capability at Berths 20 and 22. The season runs from spring into November, and the Port publishes its schedule on its cruise pages.

Two practical points follow. First, the exact berth for your ship can change, so check your cruise documents the evening before. Second, the pavilions are on the harbourfront at the Seaport, which makes the Pier 21 museum the easiest first stop for anybody not heading out of town.

Some itineraries start or end in Halifax and others simply call here on the way between New England and the Maritimes, so confirm in your documents which applies. Embarking passengers should follow the cruise line's check-in guidance. Disembarking passengers with an afternoon flight should book the car for a time that respects the airline's check-in window, not only the ship's schedule.

Pier 21 and the Canadian Museum of Immigration

The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is at 1055 Marginal Road, Halifax. A regular adult ticket was listed at $19.00 on the museum's site. Paid parking is available beside the entrance on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at $3.00 an hour to a maximum of $12.00 a day, and it is free on weekends, evenings and holidays. Buses and RVs are asked to drop off at the entrance and park across Marginal Road, per the museum's location and parking page.

Pier 21 is a good first call on a short stop because it needs no vehicle, and it sits close to the cruise buildings. A chauffeur is more useful when you carry bags: you can leave luggage in the trunk and tour the museum without them, then return to the car for the airport or a hotel. Opening hours change, so check the museum's own website the day before you go.

Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) to the cruise terminal

The airport is about 35 to 40 km from downtown Halifax, depending on whether the source is the airport's directions (north on Highway 102, Exit 6) or its statistics page, and Tourism Nova Scotia says to allow roughly 35 minutes. That is the figure we use here, 30 to 40 minutes on a normal day.

VehicleDistance and timeFare range
Executive Sedan35 to 40 km, 30 to 40 min$165 to $225
Luxury SUV35 to 40 km, 30 to 40 min$205 to $285
Executive Sprinter35 to 40 km, 30 to 40 min$295 to $400

The airport states that car services, taxis and limos are available curbside outside Arrivals and that pre-arranged taxis and limos must be booked before the passenger lands. Our Halifax airport limo guide walks through the arrivals curb in more detail.

If your ship departs in the afternoon, plan to be at the pavilion earlier than you think you need to be, and keep your cruise documents in a bag that stays with you. That is the main thing a chauffeur cannot do on your behalf.

Peggy's Cove by private car

Peggy's Cove is about 44 km from Halifax, and Tourism Nova Scotia describes the drive as roughly an hour via Highway 333 from Highway 103. There is no public transit, which makes a booked car the sensible way to see it on a cruise stop.

The safety advice on the village is firm and worth passing on. Tourism Nova Scotia warns that rogue waves commonly splash up over the rocks even on calm, sunny days, and recommends staying on dry, white rock and away from the wet, dark rock. Parking is limited from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., so a driver who can drop you at the viewing deck and wait nearby saves time. The accessible viewing deck has ramps, handrails and multiple viewpoints.

A four-hour booking covers the drive out, an hour or so at the lighthouse and a gentler return. In a sedan it is $540 to $660; an SUV is $690 to $840; a Sprinter is $960 to $1,170. See the Peggy's Cove listing from Tourism Nova Scotia before you go.

Lunenburg and the South Shore

Old Town Lunenburg is about 100 km from Halifax, around an hour's drive along the South Shore. It is one of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to Tourism Nova Scotia, and it is known for brightly painted 18th-century buildings on hilly streets. The highlights include the harbourfront, the Bluenose II replica schooner, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic and the Lunenburg Academy.

A realistic Lunenburg day is eight hours, which allows the drive both ways, an unhurried lunch and a walk down to the water. Many cruise stops are shorter than that, so this suits pre-cruise or post-cruise travellers better than a standard port call. An eight-hour sedan day is $1,080 to $1,320, an SUV is $1,380 to $1,680, and a Sprinter is $1,920 to $2,340.

Annapolis Valley wine tours by the hour

Wolfville is about 100 km from Halifax, roughly an hour's drive, and it is the heart of Nova Scotia's wine country. Tourism Nova Scotia lists more than ten wineries, farm markets and the Grand-Pré National Historic Site and UNESCO landscape around the town. Nova Scotia's first wine appellation, Tidal Bay, launched in 2012. Its rules are strict: 100 per cent Nova Scotia grapes, approved varieties, alcohol of no more than 11 per cent and approval by a blind-tasting panel, per the Tourism Nova Scotia Tidal Bay article.

This is the one Nova Scotia day where a chauffeur is plainly the right answer, because everybody gets to taste. Book eight hours for two or three vineyards and lunch, and expect the same rates as Lunenburg. For a group of eight to ten, a stretch limousine is $225 to $300 an hour with a three-hour minimum, and a mini-coach for 20 to 30 guests is $300 to $420 an hour with a four-hour minimum. Always check winery opening hours and tasting reservations with each cellar, since they vary by season.

Prices are before tax; tolls are extra, and gratuity is at your discretion. The booker gives the exact all-in fare for your exact address, and our rates page explains the card in full.

Getting around Halifax: the honest comparison

Private car (our service)$165 to $225 (sedan, 35 to 40 km)30 to 40 minLuggage, families, tight flights, tours

The cheapest option is the 320 bus, and it is the right option for a solo traveller with a rucksack and plenty of time. The airport sells tickets at the Ground Transportation Booth in Arrivals, as set out on its buses and shuttles page. A private car makes sense once there are luggage, children, a fixed flight or a shore-day plan. The airport's taxi and limo page describes how the taxi and pre-arranged system works.

Is a car service worth it from the Halifax cruise port?

Count the passengers and the bags, then look at the clock. For a pair with two suitcases and a 3 p.m. flight, a car at a known price is hard to beat. For a single traveller with a day pack and a day ahead, walk the waterfront, ride the bus or take a taxi. We would rather you saved money than took a car you did not need, and we will say so when asked.

On a Nova Scotia port call the case for a chauffeur is strongest for the day trips. Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and Wolfville each lie outside Halifax with no easy public transport, so the vehicle and the driver are most of what you are paying for.

Vehicles, luggage and ship groups

The Executive Sedan carries three passengers with two large bags and two carry-ons. The Luxury SUV carries six passengers and five or six large bags. The Executive Sprinter takes 12 to 14 passengers and 12 or more bags, which suits an extended family or a group from the same cabin deck. Read more on the fleet page.

If your party is large, book two vehicles in sequence rather than squeezing luggage into one; it is faster at the curb and kinder to everyone's knees. Tell us about wheelchairs or walkers when you book, so we can send the right vehicle.

Timing your Halifax ship day

Work back from the all-aboard time printed in your cruise documents, then leave at least a margin of safety for the drive in. Peggy's Cove and the South Shore roads are single carriageway in places, and the village fills up in the middle of the day. Fog and rain can slow a coastal drive more than the map suggests.

If the ship runs late, or the call is shortened, send the revised times and we adjust the pickup. Should the port call be cancelled or rerouted, tell us as early as you can; the cancellation terms in the booker apply to the booking.

Before and after the cruise: Halifax hotel and airport transfers

Many travellers add a night in Halifax before sailing, or a night after. Hotel transfers use the same ranges as airport work: the minimum applies on short hops, and anything farther follows the per-kilometre card. From the airport, the sedan range above holds for most downtown hotels. For connecting itineraries along the Atlantic coast, see our guides to Saint John cruise port car service and the Quebec City cruise terminal, or browse all cruise port transfers.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a limo from the Halifax cruise port to Halifax Stanfield Airport?

Halifax Stanfield is about 35 to 40 km from downtown, a 30 to 40 minute drive. An Executive Sedan is $165 to $225, a Luxury SUV is $205 to $285 and an Executive Sprinter is $295 to $400, before tax and tolls.

Which pier do cruise ships use in Halifax?

The Port of Halifax names Piers 22 and 20 as the principal cruise berths, with direct access to Pavilions 22 and 20. Pier 23 and the Ocean Terminals are also used for cruise traffic. Your cruise documents confirm your pier.

What is the cheapest way from Halifax airport to the cruise port?

The Halifax Transit Regional Express 320 bus, at $4.75 cash for an adult, is the lowest-cost option. A taxi or a private car is faster and easier with luggage. Choose the bus if you travel light and are in no hurry.

Can I visit Peggy's Cove and still make my ship?

Usually yes on a full-day call. The drive is about an hour each way, so allow four hours in total and arrive back well before the all-aboard time. Parking is tightest in the middle of the day, and a driver reduces that risk.

How much is a Peggy's Cove or Lunenburg tour by limo?

Peggy's Cove (four hours) is $540 to $660 in a sedan, $690 to $840 in an SUV or $960 to $1,170 in a Sprinter. Lunenburg (eight hours) is $1,080 to $1,320, $1,380 to $1,680 or $1,920 to $2,340 respectively.

Is it worth hiring a chauffeur for a wine tour in the Annapolis Valley?

Yes, because the driver means everyone can taste. An eight-hour day of two or three wineries and lunch is $1,080 to $1,320 in a sedan or $1,380 to $1,680 in an SUV, with a Sprinter at $1,920 to $2,340 for larger parties.

Where is the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21?

It is at 1055 Marginal Road, Halifax, on the waterfront near the cruise buildings. Check the museum's website for current hours and prices before you go.

Can you handle a group from a cruise ship?

Yes. A Sprinter seats 12 to 14, a stretch limousine seats eight to ten at $225 to $300 an hour (three-hour minimum), and a mini-coach seats 20 to 30 at $300 to $420 an hour (four-hour minimum).

What happens if my ship is late?

Give us the ship name and the revised time and we move the pickup. If your plans change altogether, the cancellation terms in the booker apply, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
