A ferry terminal limo solves a narrow, unforgiving problem: you must be at a particular gate inside a particular window, with luggage, often with children, and often after a flight. LimousineCanada.ca runs ferry terminal transfers to the four busiest Canadian terminals on the pages below, each written around that terminal's real approach roads, check-in rules and drop-off points.

The two operators covered in detail here are BC Ferries on the Pacific coast and Marine Atlantic between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. The principles carry across to every other crossing in the country, and the last sections cover how smaller services differ.

What is the best way to get to a Canadian ferry terminal?

For most travellers with luggage, a pre-booked car service is the most reliable way to reach a ferry terminal, because the check-in window is fixed and cannot be extended. Public transit is the cheapest option and works well for light packers. Rideshare is workable but cannot be reserved for a 5 a.m. sailing.

The honest answer depends on three things: how much luggage you carry, how tight your check-in window is, and where you start. A foot passenger with a daypack leaving downtown Vancouver can reach Horseshoe Bay on the TransLink 257 bus for the price of a transit fare, and nobody should pay for a limousine to do that. A family arriving at YVR on a late flight, with four large bags and a sailing the next morning, has a very different problem.

Where the cheaper choice is also the better one, the individual terminal pages say so plainly. Where it is not, they show you the fare range for a sedan, an SUV or a Sprinter so you can compare in CAD before you decide. You can also get an instant fare for your exact address.

The addresses and route lists come from the terminal pages published by BC Ferries and Marine Atlantic. Operators change schedules without much notice, so treat our pages as planning guides and confirm sailing times with the carrier.

Ferry terminal limo service on the BC coast

Three terminals anchor the Vancouver to Vancouver Island corridor. Tsawwassen sits at the south-west end of Highway 17 in Delta, about 36 km from downtown Vancouver according to BC Ferries. Horseshoe Bay sits at the west end of the Trans-Canada Highway in West Vancouver, roughly a 25-minute drive from downtown. Swartz Bay is the island-side terminal at the end of Highway 17 north of Victoria.

Each one behaves differently. Tsawwassen is a long causeway with a large vehicle holding area and is the usual choice for airport arrivals at YVR heading to Victoria. Horseshoe Bay is a compact terminal where BC Ferries reports a 25 percent reduction in vehicle space during a multi-year upgrade, and where the route to Nanaimo's Departure Bay now requires advance booking for vehicles. Swartz Bay is a pickup and drop-off point for Victoria International Airport, which is only a short drive away.

Anyone arriving on a long-haul flight should read our Vancouver airport limo page first, then the matching terminal page. Passengers sailing out of Victoria can pair the Swartz Bay page with our Victoria airport limo guide.

Ferry terminal limo service in Atlantic Canada

North Sydney is the Nova Scotia gateway for the Marine Atlantic service to Newfoundland. The terminal's civic address is 149 Prince Street. Vehicles enter from the Trans-Canada Highway through ticket booths, while pedestrians, including passenger pickup and drop-off, use Prince Street.

The crossing to Port aux Basques is 178 km, takes about seven hours and runs year-round, daily. The longer route to Argentia is 518 km, takes about 16.5 hours and is seasonal. Distances and durations are from Marine Atlantic's own sailing routes page. For travellers starting in Halifax, the drive to the terminal is roughly 410 km and about four and a half hours, which is a full-day transfer rather than a quick run.

Halifax readers can start from our Halifax airport limo page, and cruise passengers calling at Cape Breton can use the Sydney, Nova Scotia cruise port page.

How ferry check-in works, in plain terms

Check-in is the reason a ferry transfer is different from an airport transfer. The rules below are paraphrased from the operators' terminal pages and may change.

  • BC Ferries, booked sailing from Tsawwassen to Victoria or Nanaimo: check-in opens 60 minutes before departure and closes 30 minutes before. Arrive outside that window and the booking is not honoured; you travel by order of arrival.
  • BC Ferries, Southern Gulf Islands from Tsawwassen: vehicle check-in opens 90 minutes before and closes 40 minutes before; foot-passenger check-in opens 60 minutes before and closes 30 minutes before.
  • BC Ferries, Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay: vehicle travel requires advance booking and payment, and check-in opens 120 minutes before and closes 30 minutes before.
  • BC Ferries, Horseshoe Bay to Langdale with a booking: check-in opens 60 minutes before and closes 30 minutes before. Without a booking, travel is first come, first served and ticket sales close 10 minutes before departure for foot passengers and vehicles.
  • Marine Atlantic: passengers with reservations must be checked in at least two hours before the scheduled sailing, and the carrier asks you not to arrive more than four hours early.

A chauffeur plans backwards from the closing time, not the departure time. A 9:00 sailing with a 30-minute close means your car must be at the booth by 8:30, which means leaving the hotel earlier than most people expect.

Ferry terminal transfer fares at a glance

These are indicative ranges from our published rate card, before tax. They show how fares scale with distance, and the booker gives the exact all-in fare for your exact pickup address. Gratuity is at your discretion. Tolls are extra where they apply.

Cheapest ways to reach a ferry terminal, compared

Honest comparisons matter more on ferry days than on any other kind of trip. Use this table to decide whether a private car earns its place.

When the cheaper option is the better choice

If you are alone, travelling light and not in a hurry, take the bus. A day trip on foot from downtown Victoria to a Gulf Island needs a bus, not a chauffeur. If you are meeting a companion who has the car, there is nothing to book.

Water taxi in Victoria's Inner Harbour
Water taxi in Victoria's Inner Harbour

A private car earns its fee in four situations. The first is early or late departures, when transit is thin or not running. The second is a group of three or more, where one vehicle undercuts several transit fares and taxis. The third is luggage that will not fit on a crowded coach. The fourth is a hard deadline, such as a sailing you cannot miss because the next one is hours away or sold out.

Our limo versus rideshare guide goes through the same logic for ordinary city trips.

Choosing the right vehicle for a ferry day

The rate card sets the capacity. An Executive Sedan seats 3 passengers with 2 large bags and 2 carry-ons. A Luxury SUV seats 6 with 5 to 6 large bags, which makes it the sensible default for a family of four heading to a cottage. An Executive Sprinter seats 12 to 14 with 12 or more bags and suits wedding parties, golf groups and extended families.

Ferry decks are also tidy about what travels. If your party includes bicycles, kayaks or a roof box, say so when you book. Child seats are free if requested at booking, and a ferry day is a good moment to ask for them because passengers may stand on the car deck for part of the crossing.

See the fleet page and the published limo rates.

Hourly and as-directed service for island days

Some journeys are better priced by the hour than by the kilometre. A day on Salt Spring Island, a tour of Bowen Island, or a Cape Breton circuit all involve a lot of waiting and stopping. Our hourly ranges are:

  • Executive Sedan: $135-$165 per hour, two-hour minimum.
  • Luxury SUV: $175-$210 per hour, two-hour minimum.
  • Executive Sprinter: $240-$295 per hour, three-hour minimum.
  • Stretch limousine: $225-$300 per hour, three-hour minimum.
  • Mini-coach or party bus: $300-$420 per hour, four-hour minimum.

If you want the chauffeur and vehicle to travel on the ferry with you, mention it in the booking notes. The ferry operator sets its own vehicle fares and booking rules, so ask for the exact arrangement through the booker rather than assuming.

Other Canadian ferries and how they differ

Several smaller services follow the same general logic but have their own rules. The Atlantic carrier at ferries.ca lists three routes: Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on The CAT; Saint John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia on the MV Fundy Rose; and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island to Caribou, Nova Scotia, operated by Northumberland Ferries.

For any other terminal, tell us the operator, the sailing time and whether the vehicle is travelling. We will confirm what a private car can and cannot do before you pay.

Weather, fog and cancelled sailings

Ferries cancel, delay and reroute. A chauffeur booked through LimousineCanada.ca tracks the sailing you give us, but the carrier's own status page is the authority. BC Ferries publishes current conditions for every route, and Marine Atlantic rebooks passengers onto the next available sailing when weather cancels a crossing, according to its published FAQ.

Plan a buffer when the stakes are high, and take an earlier sailing than you think you need if a flight waits at the other end.

Two practical details that save sailings

The first is tides. BC Ferries notes that vehicles with very low ground clearance or long rear overhangs may be asked to wait for a later sailing at Horseshoe Bay during extreme tides. That rarely affects a standard sedan or SUV, but a Sprinter with a tow hitch or a stretch limousine is worth mentioning when you book.

The second is photo ID. Marine Atlantic requires passengers aged 5 and over to carry one piece of government-issued photo ID or two pieces without a photo, matching the name on the reservation. Pack ID in hand luggage, not the trunk.

Cancellation terms

If your plans change, here is the schedule, measured from the scheduled pickup time: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%. Ferry fares you pay to the carrier are governed by the carrier's own change rules.

How to book a ferry terminal transfer

Use the booker to enter your pickup address, your terminal and your sailing time. Tell us how many people are travelling, how many large bags you have and whether you need child seats. Flight-arrival details such as wait time and meet-and-greet are covered on our airport limo and limo service pages, and our travel desk can link flights, ferries and hotels into one itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a limo to a ferry terminal?

It depends on distance. A short terminal transfer costs the minimum for the vehicle: $145-$175 in an Executive Sedan, $180-$220 in a Luxury SUV or $295-$355 in an Executive Sprinter. Longer runs such as Halifax to North Sydney are priced per kilometre. The online booker shows the exact all-in fare for your address.

Which Canadian ferry terminals do you serve?

This section covers Tsawwassen, Horseshoe Bay and Swartz Bay on the BC Ferries network, and the Marine Atlantic terminal at North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Each has its own page. For other crossings, send the operator and sailing time and we will confirm what is possible.

How early should I arrive for a BC Ferries sailing?

If you have a booking, BC Ferries sets a check-in window that typically opens 60 minutes before departure and closes 30 minutes before, with longer windows on some routes. Without a booking, travel is by order of arrival and ticket sales close shortly before departure. Always check the terminal page for the route you are using.

How early should I arrive for the Marine Atlantic ferry?

Marine Atlantic requires that reserved passengers be checked in at least two hours before the scheduled sailing and asks you not to arrive more than four hours early. Boarding typically begins 90 to 120 minutes before departure.

Can my chauffeur drive onto the ferry with me?

Possibly, but the ferry operator sets its own vehicle fares and booking rules. Tell us in your booking notes that you want the vehicle to cross, and use the booker to confirm the arrangement before you rely on it.

Is a limo cheaper than a taxi to a ferry terminal?

Not usually for a single traveller on a short run. Taxis and rideshare can cost less for one or two people with light luggage. A pre-booked car is better value when you need a guaranteed vehicle at an hour when transit is thin, or when three or more people share the fare.

What is the cheapest way to get to Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay?

Public transit. BC Ferries lists the TransLink 620 bus to Tsawwassen from Bridgeport station and the 257 bus to Horseshoe Bay from West Georgia Street downtown. Both work for light travellers who are not under time pressure.

Do you track delayed ferries?

We track the sailing you give us and adjust where we can, but ferry delays are not always published before a vessel has left. For flight arrivals, flight tracking and free wait time are included. For ferry arrivals, tell us your booked sailing and we will plan the pickup around the published arrival time.

Do ferry terminals have pickup and drop-off zones?

Yes, and they vary by terminal. At North Sydney, pedestrian access including passenger pickup and drop-off is on Prince Street. Your terminal page lists what we know, and your chauffeur will confirm the exact point by message on the day.
