Halifax train station limo service is a niche, but a precise one. VIA Rail's Halifax station is a small, staffed building at 1161 Hollis Street, beside a waterfront-side hotel, and the train that calls there, The Ocean, is a long-distance service with only a few departures each week. Missing it is expensive, and arriving to find nobody waiting at 10 a.m. after a 23-hour journey is just as unwelcome.

This page covers how to reach the station from Halifax Stanfield, the cruise pier and the city's hotels, what VIA's published station information says, and when a bus or taxi is the smarter option.

Where is the Halifax VIA Rail station?

Halifax's VIA Rail station is at 1161 Hollis Street, Halifax, NS B3H 2P6, in the South End near the waterfront and next to a Westin hotel. It is the eastern terminus of The Ocean, which runs to Montréal. Halifax Stanfield Airport is about 35 km away, a drive of roughly 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour.

The station is not far from the main downtown hotels, the waterfront boardwalk and Pier 21, so it works as a base for a long weekend. In the other direction, the airport sits well north of the city, and the journey between the two is the single most common request we receive for this hub.

For a first look at the airport end, see our Halifax airport limo page, and for a city-wide view of chauffeured service, the Halifax limo page.

Distances are rounded road-kilometre planning figures. Where distance times rate is less than a vehicle's minimum, the minimum applies, which is why the cruise-pier run is priced the same as a longer city transfer.

The train: The Ocean and the Halifax to Moncton run

VIA Rail's schedule pages show the shape of the service from Halifax. The trip to Montréal covers 1,352 km in an average of 23 hours 23 minutes, with 3 departures per week. On the sample date VIA listed, the train left Halifax at 11:30 and reached Montréal at 09:53 the next day. A shorter run, Halifax to Moncton, covers 304 km in about 4 hours 14 minutes with 3 departures per week.

VIA lists Economy, Business and Sleeper Plus classes on the Montréal route. Fares change by date, so see the Halifax to Montréal page for current prices. Departures are few, which makes your connection to and from the station a bigger part of the day than it would be on a frequent commuter line.

The practical consequence is simple. If you are arriving at 09:53 in Montréal, your chauffeur there should be tracking the train, and if you are departing Halifax at 11:30, you will want to be at the station well before departure for baggage and boarding. Our Montréal Central Station page covers the other end of The Ocean.

Halifax Stanfield Airport to the station

Many train passengers fly in and then ride. Halifax Stanfield publishes ground-transport options on its own pages. The Halifax Transit Regional Express 320 links the airport and downtown, with tickets sold at the Ground Transportation booth in Arrivals and a cash fare listed at $4.75 for adults. Taxis, car services and limousines wait curbside outside Arrivals, and pre-arranged taxis and limousines must be booked before the passenger arrives, according to the airport's taxis and limos page.

The airport's buses and shuttles page does not state the distance or stops near the Hollis Street station, so for a bus journey check Halifax Transit's schedule and expect to finish with a short walk or a second leg.

A pre-booked chauffeur at the airport gets you to the station in about 30 to 40 minutes at $165-$195 in a sedan or $205-$245 in an SUV. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free wait after landing; domestic arrivals include 30 minutes. A name-board meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall is available as an add-on for $100-$150.

When a taxi or walking is the better choice

If you are staying within a few blocks of Hollis Street, walk. The station is adjacent to a major hotel, and a guest of that property needs nothing from us for the last few hundred metres. A taxi from a downtown hotel is a sensible choice for a short hop at a normal hour.

A pre-booked car earns its place at the airport end, at night, with luggage, or when you are arriving on an international flight and need a smooth transition. It also earns its place when several people are splitting a fare and a Luxury SUV is cheaper than two taxis. Our limo versus rideshare guide goes deeper.

Cruise days and Pier 21

On a cruise call, Halifax is busy at the pier. The Pier 21 terminal is only about 2 km from the station, so a short ride is billed at the vehicle minimum. Guests who finish a cruise in Halifax and board The Ocean the same day are the typical use case. Our Halifax Pier 21 page explains terminal access and luggage handling.

If the train is the next morning, there is a different question: where to spend the night, and how to move luggage between hotel, pier and station. A chauffeur with a Luxury SUV handles all three in one booking.

Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and the South Shore from Halifax

The station is a good starting point for the road trip that most visitors want. Peggy's Cove is about 45 km away, and our guide to Peggy's Cove covers the lighthouse, rock safety and the best times to visit. Lunenburg is about 100 km, a longer day, and the route can be combined with a lunch stop.

For a longer weekend, see our Halifax weekend guide. If you are continuing north to Cape Breton, our Cabot Trail page explains the route and the number of days to allow.

Connecting onward: Moncton, Montréal and beyond

VIA's site lists Halifax as the origin for journeys to Moncton, Bathurst, Montréal, Québec, Ottawa and Toronto, because The Ocean links into the wider network at Montréal. For a trip to Ottawa or Toronto, the usual pattern is an overnight on The Ocean and a morning connection, which makes the Montréal end of your day as important as the Halifax end. Our Ottawa station and Toronto Union Station pages cover those arrivals.

If you prefer to break the journey, Moncton is the nearest major stop on the line, 304 km from Halifax by VIA's measure. Some travellers take the shorter ride and then continue by road. We can quote a Halifax to Moncton run on request, since the road distance is of a similar order to the rail distance.

An evening in Halifax before an early train

The most common itinerary is a dinner on the waterfront, a night in a South End or downtown hotel and a morning departure. Your chauffeur can collect you from dinner, return you to your hotel with the luggage already loaded, and drive you to the curb on Hollis Street the next day. If your hotel is itself next to the station, you may only need us for the airport leg.

The booker lets you add a return leg to the same reservation. Ask for the Luxury SUV if you are travelling with sleeper-class luggage, because The Ocean is a long journey and passengers often carry more than they would on a day train.

Meeting someone off The Ocean

Because trains are few and journeys are long, meeting an arrival is a task of timing. Tell us the train and the date, and we plan the pickup from the scheduled arrival, with a margin for disembarking and collecting bags. If the train is late, the margin absorbs it, and you can message your chauffeur.

Plan on a curbside meeting rather than a platform one. Your chauffeur waits near the accessible drop-off zone on Hollis Street and sends you a message with the vehicle details.

Luggage and accessibility

VIA provides a baggage cart at Halifax, which helps if your chauffeur is waiting at the curb. The accessible drop-off zone is on the front-right side of the main entrance, and VIA asks for 48 hours' notice for curbside assistance through its reservations line.

An Executive Sedan takes 2 large bags and 2 carry-ons. A Luxury SUV takes 5 to 6 large bags and six passengers. A Sprinter takes 12 or more bags and 12 to 14 passengers. If you are travelling with bicycles, VIA's bike box and baggage rules apply, so check them before you pack.

Hourly service and special occasions

On an hourly basis the sedan is $135-$165 (two-hour minimum), the SUV $175-$210 (two-hour minimum) and the Sprinter $240-$295 (three-hour minimum). The stretch limousine is priced at $225-$300 an hour with three hours minimum, the mini-coach at $300-$420 with four.

A railway journey can be the start of a celebration, whether an anniversary trip or a family reunion. See our fleet and limo rates for details, and our private aviation guide if some of your party arrives by charter.
