Granville Island by Chauffeured Car: Public Market, Artisans and False Creek

Granville Island is easy to love and awkward to park at. A Granville Island car service handles the drop-off, the shopping bags and the timing, so the market and the water stay the point of the day.

When is the best time to visit the Granville Island Public Market?

Go on a weekday morning, soon after the 9 a.m. opening. Granville Island's own site lists the Public Market daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekends are busiest, parking fills quickly, and a chauffeured drop-off at the door avoids the search for a space.

The market's hours change with the season, and the island's official pages show the schedule for the period you are travelling. At the time of writing, the home page at granvilleisland.com shows the Public Market open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Net Loft open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Always confirm the day's hours before you set the pickup time, particularly around public holidays.

If you are arriving from the airport, our Vancouver airport limo page explains the meeting point. For the rest of the city, see the Vancouver limo service hub.

Why use a Granville Island car service at all

Granville Island is a peninsula in False Creek, tucked beneath the south end of the Granville Street Bridge. It has no sprawling lots and no easy loops. The roads are shared with pedestrians, delivery vans and cyclists, and the best hours for the market are exactly the hours when everyone else is there.

A chauffeured car solves three problems.

  1. Drop-off. You are let out at the point nearest your first stop, without circling for a space.
  2. Shopping. Market purchases, a bag of produce, a ceramic piece or a glass vase go straight into the boot, not onto a ferry.
  3. Timing. If your day also includes a ship, a flight or a dinner reservation, the car is the part of the day that is never late.

It is also a good fit for visitors who do not want to work out which ferry stops where. And it gives you a quick, quiet exit if the weather turns.

What you will find on the island

The island's home page lists the main elements.

  • The Public Market. The anchor of any visit, with food stalls, produce and a food court.
  • The Net Loft. Independent shops, open from 10 a.m.
  • The Artisan District. Studios and craft workshops.
  • The Kids Market. A separate site, with shops and an indoor play space, aimed at younger visitors.
  • Restaurants, pubs, cafés and takeaway. Plenty of choice, and most with water views.
  • Shops, arts and Indigenous art and businesses. Listed as separate categories on the official site.
  • Entertainment. Theatres and performing arts, which are listed on the events calendar.

Add the water itself. The island sits on False Creek, with small ferries crossing back and forth, sailboats and marinas on either side, and views across to downtown.

What is on this autumn

The island's events page, at the time of writing, lists a mix of performing arts, festivals and community events. They include Theatresports, which runs from early September to mid-December and which the page calls Vancouver's longest-running show for over 45 years. The Vancouver International Film Festival 2026 is listed from October 1 to October 11. A community run, Turkey Trot 2026, is listed for October 12 and supports local food banks. Other listings include improvised comedy and live music.

Event days draw crowds and change the traffic pattern around the island, so tell the booker if your date coincides with one. The calendar changes often. Treat it as a snapshot, and check the "all events" page before you plan around a specific show.

Vancouver airport to Granville Island: distances and prices

Route-distance sites put YVR to Granville Island at roughly 13 to 14 km by road, with a typical drive of about 24 to 28 minutes, depending on direction and traffic. Hotel listings near the island give figures between 13 and 15 km. Use 13 to 14 km as the planning figure.

RouteDistance (approx.)Typical driveSedan (3 pax)Luxury SUV (6 pax)Sprinter (12–14 pax)
YVR to Granville Island13–14 km25–30 min$145–$175$180–$220$295–$355

Pacific Central station to Granville Islandroughly 5 km10–20 min$145–$175$180–$220$295–$355

Each trip falls under the distance at which the per-kilometre rate overtakes the minimum, so those are minimum fares. They are before tax, with gratuity at your discretion. The online booker gives an exact all-in price for your pickup and drop-off addresses.

Flight tracking is included. After an international landing, the first sixty minutes of waiting are free, and after a domestic one it is thirty. A meet-and-greet inside the arrivals hall costs $100–$150 as an add-on. Ask for a child seat when you book and it costs nothing extra.

From the cruise terminal or the train

Ships that dock at Canada Place put you within a short drive of the island, and for a guest with six hours ashore, a morning market stop followed by a seawall walk makes a good day. Our Canada Place cruise terminal page explains the pier-side meeting point.

Rail passengers arriving at Pacific Central station, covered on our Pacific Central page, are another good match: the car takes the luggage to the hotel, then runs you to the island afterwards.

Parking, drop-off and the weekend problem

According to the island's official transportation and parking pages, pay parking is in effect from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and overnight parking is permitted only in the multi-level parkade on Old Bridge Street. Third-party guides add that lots fill quickly on weekends and that rates change, so treat any specific price as something to confirm on the day.

For you, as a passenger, none of that matters. What does matter is the pick-up point. Agree on one, and agree on a time. The chauffeur will message you when the car is in place. If you are carrying bags, say so, since the walk from a drop-off point to a market entrance can be longer than it looks on a map.

One rule catches pet owners out: dogs must be leashed across the island but are not permitted inside the market building, so plan the market visit separately if you travel with a pet.

The ferries and the #50 bus: when to use them

Two small ferry services cross False Creek, and the island's pages describe both. Aquabus stops at Hornby Street, Stamp's Landing, Yaletown and Science World, with its island dock between the Public Market and the Arts Club Theatre. False Creek Ferries stops at the Maritime Museum, the Aquatic Centre, Stamp's Landing and Science World, with its island dock near the entrance to a restaurant on the water.

Coal Harbour and downtown Vancouver
Coal Harbour and downtown Vancouver

The #50 False Creek bus stops at the island's entrance, at Anderson Street and West 2nd Avenue.

These are charming and cheap, and a good way to arrive or leave. A sensible plan combines them with a car: take the chauffeur to the island, shop and eat, then ride a ferry to Yaletown or Science World and meet the car there. It is a nice way to see the water and still have your bags carried.

A sample half-day

  1. 9:30 Pickup from your hotel. The drive is short, and the market is just opening.
  2. 10:00 Walk the Public Market while stalls are fully stocked and queues are short.
  3. 11:30 Browse the Net Loft and the Artisan District. Watch a craftsperson at work if the studios are open.
  4. 12:30 Lunch on the water.
  5. 14:00 Ferry across to Yaletown or Science World, or walk the seawall, with the car waiting at your destination.
  6. 15:00 Return to the hotel, or move on to another stop.

If you are shopping for food, ask the chauffeur to keep a cooler bag in the boot, or bring your own. The market is a good place to buy for a picnic in a park later in the day.

Combine it with Stanley Park or the North Shore

False Creek is only one side of the city. Our Stanley Park guide covers the seawall and the park's viewpoints, and the Capilano Suspension Bridge guide explains the North Shore half-day. The Granville Island morning followed by Stanley Park in the afternoon is a classic Vancouver day.

Destination Vancouver describes the Stanley Park seawall as 10 kilometres long, flat, and walkable in about three hours, or a little over an hour by bike. That is why the afternoon works best as a drive-and-sample rather than a full circuit. You can see the totem poles at Brockton Point and the view at Prospect Point without a full walk.

The wider picture is in our Vancouver luxury weekend, which links this morning to Coal Harbour, Gastown and Yaletown.

Hourly hire for a market and False Creek day

If your day has three or four stops, an hourly booking is simpler than a sequence of transfers, and it starts at a two-hour minimum.

VehicleHourly rangeThree hoursFour hours
Executive Sedan$135–$165$405–$495$540–$660
Luxury SUV$175–$210$525–$630$700–$840
Stretch limousine$225–$300 (3 hr min)$675–$900$900–$1,200

Three hours covers the island, a ferry hop and a short drive to a second stop. Four hours allows lunch to be unhurried. Prices are before tax and exclude gratuity.

An evening on the island

The island does not close when the market does. Its pages list theatres, with the Arts Club Theatre named beside one of the ferry docks, and the events calendar mixes performing arts with live music and festivals. That makes it a good evening destination as well as a daytime one.

Evening plans are where a booked car is most useful. Parking is still metered in the evening hours, the streets are dark and shared with pedestrians leaving a show, and a rideshare driver has to find you among a crowd. A chauffeur who has your show's finish time can be waiting at the agreed corner. Tell the booker the curtain time, and add a buffer for the interval and the walk out.

If your party is going on to dinner elsewhere, such as the neighbourhoods Destination Vancouver lists beyond the island, including Yaletown, Gastown and Coal Harbour, an hourly booking keeps the car with you all evening. See the visitor guide at destinationvancouver.com for the neighbourhood list.

Shopping logistics and the practical bits

A few tips earn their place here.

  • Bring a reusable bag. The market has plenty of produce and ready-to-eat items.
  • Check the market's holiday hours. The island's pages say the market is closed on Christmas Day, with reduced hours on some other holidays.
  • Allow for rain. The market is largely indoors, and the covered walkways help, but the island is an outdoor place.
  • Let the chauffeur know about fragile purchases. Glass, ceramics and cakes ride better when someone knows they are there.

Honest alternatives: bus, ferry, bike and car

Granville Island is one of the places in Vancouver where public transit and small boats are not a compromise. They are part of the experience. If you are travelling light and enjoy a ferry, take the ferry.

The ferry and bus times above come from third-party summaries of the island's transportation options, so verify them on the official site. The point is simple: for the island alone, public options win on price. A chauffeured car earns its fare when the island is one stop in a longer day, when you are arriving from YVR with bags, or when the weather is bad.

If this is your first time in Vancouver, the limo service page and the fleet page explain the options.
