Jasper National Park guide for travellers flying into Edmonton
Jasper National Park is the quieter northern neighbour to Banff. Most visitors from outside Alberta arrive through Edmonton International (YEG) and then face a four-hour highway drive that ends in the mountains. A chauffeured Edmonton airport to Jasper transfer turns that drive into rest time. Your driver tracks the flight, meets you after landing, and takes Highway 16, the Yellowhead, west.
Jasper also needs a more careful guide than most parks, because the 2024 wildfire changed what is open. Parks Canada keeps a running list of what has reopened and what remains closed, and we have built this guide around that list as it stood when we checked on 8 October 2026. Prices below are ranges in Canadian dollars with the distance and drive time beside each trip. Your final price comes from the online booker once you enter the exact pickup and drop-off addresses.
What is open in Jasper National Park right now?

Parks Canada's page, last updated 29 September 2026, lists the Jasper townsite, Highway 16, the Icefields Parkway (93N), Maligne Lake Road, Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls and Pyramid Lake as open. Maligne Canyon and the Cavell day-use area remain closed for 2026.
The official What's open in Jasper National Park page gives the detail. Maligne Lake Road reopened on 11 October 2024 together with Maligne Lookout and Maligne Lake. The Icefields Parkway reopened to vehicles on 23 August 2024. The Icefield Centre information desk is closed, though the Icefield campgrounds are open. Lac Beauvert's roads reopened in September 2024 and its full loop trail in July 2025. Cavell Meadows trailhead is also listed as closed.
Treat this as a snapshot. Rockfall, bears and weather can close a road with an hour's warning. The park publishes bulletins, and 511 Alberta shows live road status.
Edmonton airport to Jasper limo: distance, drive time and price ranges
Tourism Jasper lists Edmonton to Jasper as 366 km and four hours on Highway 16 west. Edmonton International sits south of the city, so a pickup at the airport adds distance and roughly half an hour compared with a downtown start. The road is mostly straight and flat until the foothills. Inside the national park the speed limit is 90 km/h, with slower limits where wildlife crosses.
| Vehicle | Seats and bags | Edmonton to Jasper (366 km, about 4 hours) |
|---|---|---|
| Executive Sedan | 3 passengers, 2 large + 2 carry-on | $1,700–$2,030 |
| Luxury SUV | 6 passengers, 5–6 large bags | $2,140–$2,580 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12–14 passengers, 12+ bags | $3,020–$3,625 |
Those are before tax and gratuity, and they use the 366 km Edmonton figure, so an airport start will run a little higher. The fare covers flight tracking, 60 minutes of free wait after an international landing or 30 minutes after a domestic one, and the stop for fuel or a rest break. A name-board greeting in the arrivals hall is an add-on of $100–$150. Check the Edmonton airport page for pickup detail and the rate card for the hourly option.
Jasper Dark Sky Preserve and the October festival
Parks Canada says Jasper is the second largest dark sky preserve in the world. For a traveller that has practical meaning: clear nights offer far more stars than most cities, and the darkest viewing sits away from street lighting.

Tourism Jasper lists the Jasper Dark Sky Festival for 16 to 25 October in 2026, with stargazing, music, speakers and night-sky events. Exact dates move each year, so confirm 2027 on the Tourism Jasper site. Night photography tours are offered as a separate booking.
A chauffeur helps in two ways. Night driving on park roads is the highest wildlife risk of the day, and a local driver knows which pullouts are safe. And a driver can wait with the heater running while you stand in the cold, then take you back to your hotel without anyone driving tired.
Maligne Lake Road, Medicine Lake and the Spirit Island cruise
Maligne Lake Road is the park's most rewarding short drive. It climbs from the Athabasca valley to Medicine Lake and on to Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed spots in the Rockies. Parks Canada lists Maligne Lookout, the lake and the boathouse picnic site as open.
The Spirit Island cruise is the usual way to see the lake's most famous view. A third-party operator listing shows the 2026 season as 27 May to 11 October, weather dependent, so the season has just ended for this year. A reseller listing suggests the itinerary may substitute Maligne Lookout and more time at Medicine Lake while Maligne Canyon is closed. Confirm with the operator before you book next season.
Bears and elk use this corridor heavily at dawn and dusk. Parks Canada's distance rules, described below, apply along the road.
Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls and the Icefields Parkway
The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North) is 232 km from Lake Louise to Jasper, and Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls are the two major waterfall stops on the Jasper side. Parks Canada lists both day-use areas and trailheads as open. Our guide to the Icefields Parkway and Jasper covers the full drive end to end.

Winter rules are strict. Parks Canada requires winter tires or chains on Highway 93 North and South from 1 November to 31 March, or any time snow or ice covers the road. Published parkway guidance notes limited cell service, a single fuel stop at Saskatchewan River Crossing that closes in winter, and no overnight maintenance. Start any winter trip with a full tank, and plan to avoid the road after dark.
Pyramid Lake, Lac Beauvert and the townsite
Pyramid Lake sits on a short road from town, and Parks Canada lists the trailhead as open. Lac Beauvert has its roads and day-use areas open and the loop trail restored. Together they make a relaxed half-day that fits arrival day.
The townsite is open, and Parks Canada's recovery pages describe the rebuilding as ongoing. A March 2026 report from CTV News described Jasper as still rebuilding, with housing the main constraint. Expect construction fencing in places, limited short-notice accommodation in peak months, and closures that change as work finishes. Book lodging early and tell your driver the hotel name so they can avoid blocked streets.
What recovery means for your trip
The wildfire left real scars on slopes above town and in the valley. Parks Canada says Maligne Canyon and the Cavell area remain closed because tree loss increases the risk of debris flows and landslides, and that rehabilitation is still being planned. Parks Canada said Valley of the Five Lakes would reopen in summer 2026, while Trails 9 and 9C, linking it to Old Fort Point, stay closed until further notice.
Visiting supports the town. Staying in Jasper, eating in Jasper and buying from local shops is the most direct way to help recovery. Check the Parks Canada Jasper recovery section before you travel, because it is updated more often than any guidebook.
Wildlife and road safety in Jasper
Parks Canada's distance rules apply across the mountain parks: stay at least 100 metres from bears, wolves and cougars and at least 30 metres from elk, deer, sheep, goats and moose. If an animal is on the road, stop only where it is safe, stay in the vehicle for carnivores, and never feed or approach any animal.
Wildlife on the highway is a constant risk, especially at dawn and dusk. A chauffeur drives within the 90 km/h limit, scans verges at dawn and dusk and slows through known crossings. Check the Parks Canada Jasper page for bulletins before you set out.
Passes and fees for Jasper National Park
Regular fees applied again on 8 September 2026 after the Canada Strong Pass period ended. Youth are free. Jasper's daily rate appears on the Jasper fees page. The national Discovery Pass is the same price at every park: $83.50 for an adult, $71.50 for a senior and $167.50 for a family or group, per the Parks Canada fee pages for Banff and Pacific Rim.

If you are driving the Icefields Parkway, you will cross from Banff into Jasper. A Discovery Pass covers both and usually saves money once you pass about seven days of daily admissions. Buy it before you leave or at a park gate.
When to visit Jasper
Peak season runs June to August, and the park is open year-round. Early autumn offers quieter trails and the Dark Sky Festival. Winter means skiing, frozen waterfalls and the long dark nights that make stargazing so good. Spring is short and muddy. If you want the full Maligne experience including the cruise, book between late May and early October.
