TIFF limo service: what a car can and cannot do around King Street

The Toronto International Film Festival turns the blocks around King Street West into a pedestrian-heavy, closure-heavy, celebrity-spotting maze for about eleven days every September. A TIFF limo service is useful in this setting, but only if it is realistic about the geometry. The festival's core sits within a short walk of itself, and the roads around it are the first thing to close. A car cannot take you to the red-carpet door. It can take you from Toronto Pearson to a hotel without a transit transfer, wait outside the closure line at a pre-agreed corner, and collect you after a late screening when the streetcars are diverted and the rideshare queue is a block long.

This guide frames the festival from the arrival point: Pearson, a private-aviation terminal or Union Station. It uses what the festival, the TTC and the City of Toronto published for the 2026 edition, which is the most recent one, and it says where something may differ next year. If you want fares for your own address, the online booker gives the exact all-in price.

When is TIFF, and where are the venues?

TIFF is held in September in downtown Toronto. The 2026 edition, the festival's 51st, ran from September 10 to 20. Main venues sit along King Street West, Simcoe Street and Richmond Street West. Confirm 2027 dates and venues on the official TIFF site once announced.

The 2026 edition used a cluster of venues that news outlets listed as follows, with addresses as reported:

  • TIFF Lightbox, 350 King Street West, the festival's main hub.
  • Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe Street, the largest auditorium.
  • Princess of Wales Theatre, 300 King Street West.
  • Royal Alexandra Theatre, 260 King Street West, where Midnight Madness screenings started at 11:59 p.m.
  • Scotiabank Theatre, 259 Richmond Street West.
  • John W. H. Bassett Theatre, 255 Front Street West, listed in one of the guides I checked.

Outlets disagreed on whether the festival used six or seven venues, and one still called the main hub "TIFF Bell Lightbox". Treat the list as a planning aid and verify against tiff.net for the year you travel. The festival's 2027 dates were not published in the sources I could open at the time of writing.

Pearson airport limo to the TIFF district

Toronto Pearson is the main arrival point for festival guests, and the downtown run is the classic chauffeur transfer. Travel sources put the trip at about 27 km, and a typical drive is 30 to 45 minutes outside peak traffic, longer when the highways into the core are backed up. The rate card turns that into a simple table before tax, with tolls such as the 407 ETR and gratuity extra:

Trip (approx. km, typical drive)Executive SedanLuxury SUVExecutive Sprinter
Pearson to King West hotel (about 27 km, 30–45 min)$145–$175$180–$220$295–$355
Pearson to Yorkville (about 27 km, 35–50 min)$145–$175$180–$220$295–$355

At that distance the minimum transfer applies in all three vehicles. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free wait after landing and domestic arrivals include 30, with flight tracking built in. A name-board meet-and-greet inside the arrivals hall is available for $100 to $150. If you are travelling with a publicist, a director or a small delegation, the Sprinter carries 12 to 14 passengers and 12 or more bags. See the Pearson airport limo page for terminal-by-terminal arrival detail.

Road closures and Festival Street: what 2026 looked like

The City of Toronto, the TTC and the festival all published closure information for 2026, and the pattern is likely to repeat. The TTC reported that King Street West between Spadina Avenue and University Avenue was closed from 5 a.m. on Thursday, September 10 until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 14, and again on Monday, September 14 and Tuesday, September 15 from 3 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. It also warned of possible delays from red-carpet activity on King Street from September 16 to 19. You can read the details on the TTC's TIFF service adjustments page.

News coverage added more. CP24, reporting the City's notice, said a series of entertainment-district streets closed from September 10 to 14, including Simcoe Street, Ed Mirvish Way, Duncan Street, John Street, Widmer Street, Blue Jays Way, Peter Street, Mercer Street and Charlotte Street. Festival Street, the free outdoor programme with screenings, live music, an art market and a food market, took over King Street West. Outlets gave slightly different dates, September 10 to 13 versus September 11 to 13, for the Peter Street to University Avenue stretch, and a separate closure on Yorkville Avenue covered a TIFF activation there.

The practical lesson is simple. During the opening weekend, the streets in front of the biggest hotels and venues are not drivable. Plan your drop-off on the nearest open street, usually one block away.

Red-carpet arrivals and how to plan a premiere evening

A premiere evening has a rhythm, and understanding it helps you plan a car around it. Fans gather in dedicated viewing areas on King Street and at David Pecaut Square, and the red carpet runs inside the closure. If you are attending a ticketed premiere, follow the arrival instructions on your ticket and ask the venue where a car may stop.

For guests who are not on the carpet, the evening is different. You want to arrive, park the car out of the way and walk the last block. When you book, give the driver the address of the hotel or restaurant and the venue name, and ask the driver to stage a block or two beyond the closure so that the return pickup is not caught in a crowd.

Hosts should also remember that the streetcar diversions affect everyone. The TTC rerouted the 504A/304 King and 508 Lake Shore, and the 504B King did not run west of York Street. That puts more people on foot and in taxis, which makes a booked pickup at a known corner more valuable than usual.

Midnight Madness and late-night screenings

Midnight Madness screenings began at 11:59 p.m. at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in 2026. Those finish well after 1 a.m., long after most transit has thinned. The UP Express runs late but not all night: the last train from Union Station was listed at 1:00 a.m. in the schedule I checked, and the last train from Pearson at 12:54 a.m.

If you plan a late screening, decide in advance how you are getting home. A pre-booked pickup at the end of the film is calmer than a rideshare surge, and you can book it for a fixed time with a buffer for any post-screening event.

Hotels, Yorkville and where a chauffeured car helps

Festival guests tend to cluster in three places: King West and the entertainment district, Yorkville and the Bloor corridor, and the waterfront. Each has a different problem. King West is closed to cars at the worst moments. Yorkville has sponsor activations that can close side streets. The waterfront is quieter but further from the venues.

A chauffeured car helps most with the arrival and departure legs, and less with the in-between. If you stay on King West, you may not need a car between venues at all. If you stay in Yorkville, a car or the subway makes sense for the crossing to King West. Ask the hotel which entrance its own guests use during closures, and give that entrance as your pickup address.

Hourly chauffeur options for premiere nights

For a premiere night that includes a hotel departure, a dinner and a venue, an hourly booking can be better value than three separate transfers. Rates before tax, gratuity at your discretion:

Executive Sedan3 passengers$135–$165 /hr2 hours$270–$330
Luxury SUV6 passengers$175–$210 /hr2 hours$350–$420
Stretch limousine8–10 passengers$225–$300 /hr3 hours$675–$900

A four-hour sedan block would run $540 to $660. Browse the fleet and the full rate card if you want to compare vehicles. A stretch limousine is a popular choice for a group heading to a gala, but remember that closures limit how close it can get, so agree a drop-off point before the night.

Private aviation arrivals for festival guests

Some festival guests arrive on private aircraft. Our Toronto Pearson private-aviation page covers the terminal side, and the downtown run is the same 27 km. The fare follows the same rate card as from the main terminal. Ask your operator whether a car may meet the aircraft and how customs is handled before you finalize a time.

Honest comparison: UP Express and TTC, taxi, rideshare and a private car

The cheapest route into the festival district from Pearson is usually the UP Express. UP Express lists the trip between Pearson and Union Station as about 28 minutes, with trains every 15 minutes. With PRESTO the adult one-way fare was listed at $9.25. Weekday first trains were listed at 4:55 a.m. from Union and 5:27 a.m. from Pearson, and the last at 1:00 a.m. and 12:54 a.m. Check upexpress.com for the current schedule.

OptionTypical costTimeWho it suits

Executive Sprinter$295–$35530–45 min off-peakDelegations and film crews

If you have one bag and you are staying near Union Station or the entertainment district, the UP Express is the better choice and we will say so. If you are arriving late after a delayed flight, travelling with equipment or hosting guests, a booked car is more predictable. Our Toronto limo page covers more of the downtown logistics.

Delegations, film crews and gear

Film delegations bring equipment cases, wardrobe and sometimes a publicist's entire kit. Plan the vehicle by bags, not seats. A Sprinter carries 12 or more bags, an SUV five to six large bags and a sedan two large and two carry-ons. If you are not sure, book the larger vehicle. Child seats are free if requested at booking.

Because closures change by hour, ask your driver to confirm the pickup location 30 minutes before every scheduled run, and share a mobile number with the person who is actually travelling.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Toronto International Film Festival?

TIFF runs in September. The 2026 edition, the 51st, ran from September 10 to 20. The 2027 dates were not available in the sources I could open at the time of writing, so check the festival site before you plan.

How much is a limo from Pearson to downtown Toronto during TIFF?

For a distance of about 27 km the minimum transfer applies: $145 to $175 in an Executive Sedan, $180 to $220 in a Luxury SUV and $295 to $355 in an Executive Sprinter, before tax. Tolls and gratuity are extra. The online booker gives the exact all-in fare for your address.

Can a limo drop me at the red carpet?

Usually not. King Street West and several side streets are closed to general traffic during the opening weekend. A driver can drop you at the nearest open street, normally a block away, and agree a pickup corner for the return.

What is the cheapest way to get from Pearson to TIFF?

The UP Express is the cheapest fast route. It takes about 28 minutes to Union Station, and the adult PRESTO fare was listed at $9.25. From Union Station, King West venues are a short walk or a TTC ride away.

Is an airport limo worth it for TIFF?

It is worth it if you have luggage or equipment, a group, a tight schedule or a late arrival. It is not worth it if you are travelling alone with one bag and staying near Union Station.

What time does the UP Express stop running?

In the schedule I checked, the last weekday train left Union Station at 1:00 a.m. and left Pearson at 12:54 a.m. Schedules can change, so confirm on the UP Express site.

How do cancellations work for a TIFF booking?

Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup and there is no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less it is 50%, and at 24 hours or less, or for a no-show, it is 100%. All are measured from the scheduled pickup time.

Where should I stay for TIFF?

King West puts you closest to the venues, though streets close. Yorkville is quieter and about a subway ride away. Choose based on the screenings and parties you plan to attend.
