Halifax is the rare Canadian city where the best parts are on foot and the best day trip is by car. The harbourfront boardwalk, Citadel Hill, the Public Gardens and the museums are all within a short walk of one another. But Halifax Stanfield is about 35 km from downtown, and the coastline beyond the city, from Peggy's Cove to Lunenburg, is only really practical with a driver. That is where a Halifax airport limo and a chauffeur by the hour fit in.

Below is a Friday-to-Sunday plan with the airport transfer, a walking weekend downtown, a South Shore option, and the honest numbers on cheaper alternatives.

How do you get from Halifax Stanfield airport to downtown?

Halifax Stanfield is about 35 km from downtown Halifax, a 35 to 45 minute drive depending on Highway 102 traffic. Options are Halifax Transit's Route 320 bus ($4.75 cash adult fare), a taxi or airport car service from the curb outside Arrivals, a seasonal airport shuttle, or a pre-booked chauffeur at $165 to $195 in an Executive Sedan.

The airport's site says that airport car services, taxis and limos are available curbside outside Arrivals for all passengers, and that Halifax Transit's Regional Express Route 320 links the airport with downtown Halifax. Adult cash fare on the 320 is $4.75, seniors and children pay $3.25, and children aged 12 and under ride free; exact change is required, and tickets are sold 24 hours a day at the Ground Transportation Booth in Arrivals. Maritime Bus also runs an airport shuttle, but schedules and drop-off points change by season, so check the operator's page.

Distance matters on the rate card, because 35 km is just past the point where the minimum transfer stops applying. The ranges, before tax and gratuity, are:

VehicleCapacityStanfield to downtown (about 35 km)
Executive Sedan3 passengers, 2 large bags plus 2 carry-ons$165 to $195
Luxury SUV6 passengers, 5 to 6 large bags$205 to $245
Executive Sprinter12 to 14 passengers, 12+ bags$295 to $355

Enter your hotel in the booker and you get the all-in figure, which is the number to rely on. A downtown run at this distance is exactly the kind of trip where a fixed fare removes guesswork.

Friday evening: arriving and settling in

On a Friday evening, allow the upper end of the drive-time range, since the trip can stretch toward 45 minutes depending on traffic on Highway 102. If your flight is international, the free wait is 60 minutes; for domestic arrivals it is 30. A meet-and-greet with a name board inside the arrivals hall is an add-on of $100 to $150, which is handy if you are collecting a client or a parent. Child seats are free if requested at booking.

Check in near the waterfront if you can. Tourism Nova Scotia describes the Halifax boardwalk as one of the world's longest urban boardwalks, running 4 km from Pier 21 at the Halifax Seaport to Casino Nova Scotia, and Discover Halifax notes that the waterfront is flat and accessible. On Friday night you can walk it end to end, past the Historic Properties buildings and Bishop's Landing, which the visitor bureau describes as a mix of upscale shops and dining.

Saturday morning: Citadel Hill and the Public Gardens

Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is at 5425 Sackville Street. Parks Canada lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 7 to November 5, 2026, with the grounds open year-round and free admission for youth. Costumed interpreters of the 78th Highlanders and the 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery recreate 1869, and there is an Army Museum on site. The hill also gives the best free view over the harbour, so even if you skip the museum, a walk to the top is worthwhile.

From the Citadel it is a short walk to the Halifax Public Gardens, at Spring Garden Road and Summer Street. The gardens were founded in 1867 and are regarded as one of the best-preserved Victorian gardens in North America; they are a designated national historic site. Admission is free, and the gates open at 8 a.m. and close 30 minutes before dusk. A bandstand in the middle hosts concerts, and the grounds are open year-round.

A car is not needed between these two stops. If someone in your party finds the climb up Citadel Hill difficult, ask your driver to drop you at the top and collect you at the bottom, which keeps the morning relaxed.

Saturday midday: the Seaport

The Halifax Seaport is a short walk along Marginal Road from the south end of the boardwalk, and it is home to three things that are worth a stop.

Tall ships moored on the Halifax waterfront

  • The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 at 1055 Marginal Road. Adult tickets are listed at $19; the museum covers Canadian immigration history and offers records for family researchers.
  • The Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market at 961 Marginal Road, open Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., year-round. In peak season it has over 100 vendors, and it calls itself the oldest continually operating farmers' market in North America. Free public parking is available onsite on weekends.
  • The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic at 1675 Lower Water Street, which tells the story of the 1917 Halifax Harbour Explosion and holds a Titanic-related collection, including items linked to the crew of the Mackay-Bennett, which recovered victims.

If you arrive by ship, our Halifax Pier 21 cruise port page explains the port logistics, and many of these stops sit within a short walk of the terminal.

Saturday evening: dinner and the harbour at night

Dinner is easiest downtown or along the waterfront, where you can walk from your hotel. Reserve ahead for Friday and Saturday, and ask the concierge which restaurants are close to the lobby. If you want a car at the end of the night, book the pickup time when you book the airport run, so it is already arranged.

Sunday: a South Shore day by car

The South Shore is why a driver pays for itself. Peggy's Cove is about 43 km from Halifax on Route 333, roughly 45 to 50 minutes, and Lunenburg is about 100 km southwest, one to one and a half hours depending on route and traffic. Our separate Peggy's Cove lighthouse guide covers rock safety and timing in detail, so here we focus on logistics.

Peggy's CoveAbout 43 km, 45 to 50 min$200 to $240$250 to $305$355 to $425
LunenburgAbout 100 km, 1 to 1.5 h$465 to $555$585 to $705$825 to $990

A South Shore day with several stops is better priced by the hour. An Executive Sedan is $135 to $165 per hour with a two-hour minimum, so an eight-hour day is $1,080 to $1,320 before tax; a Luxury SUV is $175 to $210 per hour, or $1,400 to $1,680 for eight hours. You decide the stops: a typical order is Peggy's Cove early, lunch in Mahone Bay or Chester, and Lunenburg for the afternoon before the return.

Where a car can stop in Halifax

  • Waterfront boardwalk: a pedestrian route. Your driver can drop you at the Seaport on Marginal Road or near your hotel, and you walk from there.
  • Citadel Hill: the address is 5425 Sackville Street. Tell your driver whether you want to start at the top or the bottom.
  • Public Gardens: pedestrian only inside; the gates are on Spring Garden Road and Summer Street.
  • Peggy's Cove: read the lighthouse guide first, then agree a start time with your driver so you are not rushed at the rocks.
  • Farmers' market: on-site weekend parking is free, which makes a quick Sunday visit simple if you are in a car.

Weather, tides and what to pack

Nova Scotia's weather changes with the ocean. Fog, wind and rain can sweep in quickly, and the coast is cooler than the city on the same day. Pack a windproof layer even in summer, sturdy shoes for the rocks at Peggy's Cove, and a light umbrella. In winter, driving conditions on Highway 102 and Route 333 depend on the weather, and a local driver watches the forecast so you do not have to.

If you want a longer coastal trip, our guides to the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton and Kejimkujik National Park are good next steps. Both are multi-day journeys rather than weekend add-ons.

If you are a solo visitor with a backpack, the 320 is the better value, and we recommend it plainly. If you are carrying skis, golf clubs or a stroller, travelling with four or five others, or landing at a time when the bus is infrequent, the chauffeured option pays for itself in time and stress. See the limo rates page for the hourly rate card.

Families, groups and accessibility

Every vehicle on the fleet page takes a child seat. A Luxury SUV seats six with five to six large bags, which is the best fit for a family of five. Larger parties for weddings or conferences can use the Executive Sprinter, which seats 12 to 14. Halifax's waterfront is flat and the Seaport market and museum list accessible parking and washrooms. If someone needs a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, tell us when you book.

Events that change the weekend

Halifax fills up for certain events, and fares and hotel rooms follow. The Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo is one example, and our Royal Nova Scotia Tattoo guide covers its status and logistics. Check the event's own site before you plan around it, because dates and formats change from year to year.

Sample weekend plan

  • Friday: Stanfield pickup, check in on or near the waterfront, boardwalk walk and dinner.
  • Saturday: Citadel Hill and the Public Gardens in the morning, Seaport market and Pier 21 or the Maritime Museum at midday, dinner downtown.
  • Sunday: Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg by car, back in Halifax for dinner or straight to Stanfield with a cushion of at least 90 minutes for a domestic flight.

Start with the Halifax airport limo page for airport-specific details, then browse airports across Canada and our limo service page for events and tours, and read the official pages for Halifax Citadel, Pier 21, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax Stanfield buses and shuttles and the Public Gardens.

In an Executive Sedan the airport run is $165 to $195; a Luxury SUV is $205 to $245; an Executive Sprinter is $295 to $355. All are before tax and gratuity, and the booker confirms the final amount.

How long does it take to drive from Halifax to Peggy's Cove?
