Butchart Gardens is the single most requested excursion from Victoria, and it is easy to see why. Fifty-five acres of display gardens, a family still running the place and a calendar that changes with the seasons make it worth visiting more than once. It is also not in downtown Victoria. The gardens are in Brentwood Bay, on the Saanich Peninsula, which means a transfer of 35 to 45 minutes from the Inner Harbour. This guide covers the gardens themselves, the best times to visit, the transport options with real numbers, and how a chauffeured car fits into a day that also includes the harbour.
Butchart Gardens limo and car service: what the day looks like
A Butchart Gardens car service works as a half-day arrangement. The driver collects you at your hotel, at the airport or at the cruise terminal, drives to Brentwood Bay, waits within reach while you walk the gardens, and brings you back to the Inner Harbour or your next stop. There is no schedule except yours, and no need to plan around bus timetables that thin out in the afternoon.
The gardens' own directions page gives the numbers worth knowing: about 22 km and roughly 35 to 45 minutes from downtown Victoria, about 13 km and 25 to 30 minutes from the Victoria airport, and about 14.5 km and 10 to 15 minutes from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal. Those figures are what a chauffeur plans around, with a margin for summer traffic on the way back into the city.
How long do you need at Butchart Gardens, and when is it quietest?

Most visitors need two to three hours, longer in peak bloom or at Christmas. The Gardens say the quieter times are generally 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m. daily. Arriving at opening and leaving for a late lunch usually gives the calmest walk.
Advance tickets are not required. The Gardens say you can buy admission at the gate, and their online daily tickets are not tied to a specific date or time, do not guarantee entry and are non-refundable, although unused tickets can be applied to a future visit. In other words, there is no timed-entry slot to match, which is helpful when a driver is managing the road. There is a different exception for the Christmas season, when tickets go on sale the Wednesday after Canadian Thanksgiving. The Gardens list that as October 14, 2026, for the period December 1 to January 6.
What you will see: the gardens and the calendar
The Butchart Gardens site names five core areas: the Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden and the Mediterranean Garden. The gardens were created by Jennie Butchart and are still privately owned and operated by the Butchart family. The property covers 55 acres and was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2004, marking its hundredth birthday.
The calendar matters because the experience changes with the month. At the time of writing, the site listed an Autumn Display for October 1 to 31, greenhouse tours on Saturdays and Sundays from October 31 to November 29, and a Magic of Christmas Dinner and Dance on November 27 and 28. A winter and Christmas programme follows, and spring and summer bring the heaviest bloom and crowds. Pick the month that matches what you want to see, and read the current events page the week you travel.
Hours and admission, month by month
The Gardens publish a seasonal table on their hours and rates page. Hours are gate times, and the Gardens are open for viewing one hour after the gates close. At the time of writing, the listed hours were 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for October 2026, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for November, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. for December 1 to 24, closed on December 25, and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. from December 26 to January 6. The Gardens close for a staff holiday in the second half of January, and reopen in February with 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. hours.
Adult admission (18 and over) was listed at $36.75 for October and $28.60 for November, with youth (13 to 17) at $18.38 and $14.30, and child (5 to 12) at $3.00. Prices include tax, are in Canadian dollars and may change without notice. No senior or student discounts are offered, and the page lists a 12 Month Pass option. Several date ranges had ambiguous pricing on the page, so confirm the rate you will pay on the official hours and rates page before you go.
Fares: airport, downtown Victoria and the cruise terminal
All three starting points are short runs, so the minimum transfer fare applies. The fares below are Canadian dollars before tax; the booker confirms the final amount for your address.
| From | Distance and typical drive | Executive Sedan (3 pax) | Luxury SUV (6 pax) | Executive Sprinter (12-14 pax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria airport (YYJ) | about 13 km, 25-30 min | $145-$175 | $180-$220 | $295-$355 |
| Downtown Victoria / Inner Harbour | about 22 km, 35-45 min | $145-$175 | $180-$220 | $295-$355 |
| Ogden Point cruise terminal | similar to downtown, allow extra for cruise-day traffic | $145-$175 | $180-$220 | $295-$355 |
| Swartz Bay ferry terminal | about 14.5 km, 10-15 min | $145-$175 | $180-$220 | $295-$355 |
You need a return trip as well, so many guests choose an hourly booking, which keeps the same car and driver. Over four hours, expect roughly $540-$660 in an Executive Sedan at $135-$165 an hour, or $700-$840 in a Luxury SUV at $175-$210 an hour. A five-hour block is $675-$825 and $875-$1,050 respectively. Hourly sedans and SUVs have a two-hour minimum. See limo rates and fleet for seats and bags.
For arrivals, see the Victoria airport limo page. For cruise passengers, the Ogden Point cruise terminal page covers the harbour side.
A half-day plan from the Inner Harbour
This plan works for a morning departure and gets you back for an afternoon in the harbour.

- 8:30 a.m. Pickup at your hotel or at Ogden Point, with luggage left behind.
- 9:15 a.m. Arrive at Butchart Gardens at the 9 a.m. opening, which is the quietest period. Park is free, and the driver stays nearby.
- 9:30 a.m. Walk the Sunken Garden first, then the Rose, Japanese, Italian and Mediterranean gardens in whichever order suits the season.
- 11:30 a.m. Coffee or lunch on site. A late-morning meal avoids the midday crush.
- 12:30 p.m. Return to the car.
- 1:15 p.m. Back in Victoria for the Inner Harbour. Walk the waterfront and the Parliament Buildings, both described on Tourism Victoria.
- 3:00 p.m. Optional whale-watching or an afternoon tea reservation made in advance.
Skip the harbour if the Gardens run long. You can also add Butchart to a wider day tour by hiring the car hourly for six to eight hours.
Parking and drop-off at the Gardens
The Gardens say all parking is free, with spaces for cars, bicycles and RVs, and close parking available on request for wheelchair users. Overnight parking is not permitted. A chauffeur drops you near the entrance and waits in the car park, so you do not need to bring a parking plan. Cruise days can be busy, so arriving at opening helps.
In Victoria itself, the harbour area is built for walking. Your driver will pick the closest practical drop-off to your hotel, and for the Inner Harbour you may be dropped a short walk from the waterfront. On cruise days, the area near the terminals is busy, so name the pickup point in advance.
Cruise-day logistics
If you arrive on a cruise, the Gardens' own directions page covers the main alternative: a shuttle from the Ogden Point terminal to downtown Victoria for $10 USD one way, or $13 USD for unlimited daily use, after which you can transfer to the options below. A taxi directly to the Gardens is listed at about $60 to $65 CAD. A pre-booked chauffeur is a better alternative when the group is three or more, since the total fare for a sedan or SUV can be comparable per person and you avoid the shuttle and bus connection.

Note that some May cruise-ship excursions take place outside regular hours, according to the Gardens. Build in a buffer for the all-aboard time, and tell your driver the departure time of the ship so the return is planned backward from it. See our Victoria weekend guide for more ways to spend the rest of a port day.
Families, groups and accessibility in the Gardens
Child admission (ages 5 to 12) is listed at a low flat price, and the Gardens offer close parking for wheelchair users on request. A Luxury SUV seats six with five or six large bags, which suits a family with a stroller, and an Executive Sprinter carries 12 to 14 for a wedding party or a conference excursion. Ask for a child seat at booking and it is supplied at no charge.
The Gardens are a long walk across varied terrain. If anyone in your party tires easily, plan for a slower pace and tell the driver where you will finish, since the car can collect you at the nearest point.
What to wear and what to expect
The walk is mostly outdoors. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a layer, since Saanich Peninsula mornings can be cool even in summer. Bring an umbrella in autumn and winter, and sunscreen in July. Photographers should arrive early for softer light and fewer people in the frame.

At Christmas, the evenings are cold and the grounds are lit. Hours then run from the afternoon into the night, so a chauffeur is helpful for the late drive back to Victoria.
Honest alternatives: BC Transit, tours and taxis
BC Transit reaches the Gardens, and it is the cheapest option by far. According to the Gardens' directions page, from downtown Victoria you take the #75 from Belleville Street, a trip of about 50 to 60 minutes, though some afternoon #75 trips do not go to the Gardens, so check the sign. From the airport, take the #87 or #88 and transfer to the #81 or #75. Fares are listed at $3 per ride or a $6 day pass. YYJ's own ground transportation page lists BC Transit routes 70, 72, 87 and 88, and warns that large suitcases can be hard to fit on board.
| Option | Cost (CAD) | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BC Transit #75 from Belleville St. | $3 per ride or $6 day pass | about 50-60 min | Solo travellers, no luggage, flexible schedule |
| Harbour sightseeing bus (CVS Sightseeing, from the Empress) | per-person ticket | per operator | Visitors who want a guided run |
| Taxi from Ogden Point | about $60-$65 | similar to a car from downtown | Couples with a fixed schedule |
| Private car, Executive Sedan | $145-$175 per transfer | 25-45 min | Couples, small families, cruise passengers |
| Private car, Luxury SUV | $180-$220 per transfer | 25-45 min | Families of up to six |
If you are alone, take the bus. If you are two on a cruise stop with limited time, a taxi may be adequate. A chauffeur wins on groups of three or more, on tight cruise schedules, and on any day with luggage.
Pairing Butchart with the rest of Victoria
Butchart is only one part of a Victoria day. Our Victoria weekend guide shows how it fits with the Inner Harbour, Oak Bay and afternoon tea. If you are continuing west, the Pacific Rim and Tofino guide covers the Island's wilder side. Arrivals by air can start from the Victoria airport page, and our wider airport limo service covers the other Canadian gateways.
Booking a Butchart half-day
Put your pickup point and Butchart Gardens into the booker and pick a transfer or an hourly block for the wait. For airport arrivals the car is tracked against your flight, with an hour of free waiting after an international landing and half an hour after a domestic one; a name-board greeter in the arrivals hall costs $100-$150 extra.
Cancellations are counted back from the scheduled pickup: free with more than 72 hours' notice, 10% inside 72 hours, 50% inside 48 hours, and the full fare inside 24 hours or for a no-show. On cruise days, pass on the ship's all-aboard time.
