Victoria to Tofino car service: the west coast without the wheel
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and the town of Tofino sit on the exposed west coast of Vancouver Island, and the road to them is the longest, twistiest drive on this island. Victoria International (YYJ) is the usual arrival point for travellers who want to see the Pacific from a rental cottage or a resort suite. A Victoria to Tofino car service turns the four-and-a-half-hour drive into a rest, with a driver who handles Highway 4 and its switchbacks while you watch the forest go by.
The trip is not for everyone, and we will say so in the comparison table below. For some travellers a flight from Vancouver or a rental car is the better choice. For a group of three to six, or for anyone who dreads the Sutton Pass in the rain, a private car is straightforward. Every price here is a range in Canadian dollars with the distance and drive time beside each trip, and the booker confirms the all-in figure for your addresses.
How far is Tofino from Victoria, and how long does the drive take?

Tofino is roughly 317 km from Victoria, about 4 hours 20 minutes without stops, according to one route source. Parks Canada says Long Beach is about 5 hours from Victoria, 3.5 hours from Nanaimo and 2 hours from Port Alberni. Allow extra for fog, rain and roadworks.
Parks Canada describes the final stretch from Port Alberni as 108 km of steep, twisting road on Highway 4, the Pacific Rim Highway, taking at least 90 minutes. The route from Victoria runs north on the Trans-Canada Highway, turns west onto Highway 4 north of Nanaimo, passes Port Alberni and Sutton Pass, then reaches the Tofino and Ucluelet junction. Turn right there for the Long Beach Unit of the park, or continue north about 28 km to Tofino. Sources give slightly different Victoria distances, from 317 km to 320 km, so treat all figures as approximate.
Travellers coming from the mainland by ferry reach Nanaimo first, and Parks Canada describes the drive from the Nanaimo ferry terminal as about three hours along Highway 4. That makes a Vancouver arrival followed by a ferry and a Nanaimo pickup a sensible alternative to starting from Victoria, and the booker will price a pickup at either terminal. Cathedral Grove, the old-growth forest on the way, is a common stop. The road is also very busy in summer, and Parks Canada suggests using pullouts to let faster traffic pass.
Price ranges for the Vancouver Island routes
Long Beach and Tofino are far enough from every airport that the fare matters. These ranges apply the standard per-km rates, before tax and gratuity. The Victoria figure uses the 317 km city-centre distance, so an airport start in Sidney will vary slightly.
| Trip | Distance and drive time | Executive Sedan | Luxury SUV | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria to Tofino | about 317 km, about 4.5 hours | $1,475–$1,760 | $1,855–$2,235 | $2,615–$3,140 |
| Nanaimo to Tofino | about 200 km, about 3 hours | $930–$1,110 | $1,170–$1,410 | $1,650–$1,980 |
| Port Alberni to Long Beach | 108 km, at least 90 minutes | $500–$600 | $630–$760 | $890–$1,070 |
| Tofino airport to Tofino | about 11 km, 15 minutes | $145–$175 | $180–$220 | $295–$355 |
The small trip falls under the minimum transfer, which is why it shows the minimum range. The Victoria airport page covers the pickup, and the rate card shows hourly pricing for days spent hopping between beaches. Flight tracking comes with every airport pickup, along with 60 minutes of free wait after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one.
What is Pacific Rim National Park Reserve?
The reserve has three units. The Long Beach Unit offers beaches and storm watching and is accessible year-round. The West Coast Trail Unit is a backcountry route, open from 1 May to 30 September. The Broken Group Islands Unit in Barkley Sound can only be reached by boat and is also open 1 May to 30 September. Most visitors who arrive by road mean the Long Beach Unit, which is what this guide focuses on.

The park lies in the traditional territories of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. Parks Canada's administration building is at 2040 Pacific Rim Highway in Ucluelet. The park's official page lists current notices. When we checked, it reported wolf activity that had led to closures, dog prohibitions and a warning, so read it before you walk anywhere with a pet or a child.
Fees, parking and passes at Long Beach
Regular fees resumed on 8 September 2026. According to the Parks Canada fees page for the Long Beach Unit, daily admission is $12.25 for an adult, $10.75 for a senior and $24.50 for a family or group of up to seven in one vehicle. Youth are free.
A separate Beach Walk parking charge applies at the Long Beach, Kwisitis, Incinerator and Wickaninnish lots, with a four-hour maximum: $7.75 for an adult, $6.75 for a senior and $15.50 for a family or group. The Discovery Pass is $83.50 for an adult, $71.50 for a senior and $167.50 for a family or group, and it removes the daily admission charge across more than 80 destinations.
A chauffeur does not change these fees, but the four-hour limit on beach parking affects how you plan a day. A driver can drop you at the lot, park legally and meet you at a fixed time.
When to go: summer, shoulder seasons and storm watching
Summer is the driest and busiest season. The beaches are at their most accessible, the park is fully staffed and the highway is crowded. Shoulder seasons are calmer, and accommodation is easier.

Winter is the storm-watching season, when large Pacific swells break on the headlands and rock shelves. Sources differ on the exact window. One older article describes November through February, and a travel guide describes December to March. Plan on winter weather being wetter and colder, and book accommodation with a view if the storms are the point.
A word on safety. Large waves and driftwood logs can be dangerous on the beach even when the weather looks mild. Watch the surf from a safe distance, keep children close and follow any signs. The rain is also real: waterproof layers matter more than sunscreen from October onward.
A practical day plan for Long Beach
- Morning, arrival or hotel pickup: Head to the Long Beach parking lots early, before they fill.
- Late morning, Long Beach walk: Walk the sand with the four-hour parking limit in mind.
- Lunch in Tofino: The town is about 28 km north of the Tofino and Ucluelet junction.
- Afternoon, Wickaninnish area: A second beach or lookout, using a second parking lot if needed.
- Evening, storm watching or sunset: In winter, look for rain squalls over the headlands. In summer, the sunset over open water is the show.
Because roads are narrow and parking lots small, a private car with a driver who stays with the vehicle is useful on a day like this. Hourly hire is priced at $135–$165 for a sedan, $175–$210 for an SUV and $240–$295 for a Sprinter, with a two-hour minimum on the cars and three on the Sprinter. A full eight-hour day comes to about $1,080–$1,320 in a sedan or $1,400–$1,680 in an SUV before tax.
Getting to Tofino without the long drive
Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ) is about 11 km from town. According to published airline and operator information, Pacific Coastal Airlines flies from Vancouver in about 45 minutes, and Harbour Air runs wheeled flights between Vancouver International's South Terminal and Tofino four days a week in its winter schedule. That schedule was published for 27 October 2025 to 29 March 2026, with wheeled service due to resume in fall 2026, so confirm with the airline. Spring and summer flights to Tofino use seaplanes landing at Tofino Harbour.

There is no direct flight from Victoria to Tofino and no direct bus link. A bus journey from Victoria involves a transfer in Nanaimo and takes about six hours. If you fly into Vancouver, our Vancouver airport limo service handles the leg to the ferry terminal or the airport's South Terminal.
Highway 4 safety and driving conditions
Highway 4 stays open year-round, but conditions change quickly. The Sutton Pass section is narrow and winding, and rain or snow can slow traffic. Check DriveBC before you leave. Plan breaks, fill the tank in Port Alberni, and leave early so you are not driving in the dark through fog.
A professional driver reduces the stress but not the length of the drive. Expect to spend four to five hours in the car, so stop for lunch at Cathedral Grove or Port Alberni, and keep snacks and water in the cabin.
Weather and what to wear
Bring a proper rain jacket, waterproof shoes and warm layers, even in July. West coast fog can drop temperatures quickly. In winter, wear boots with grip for wet rock and bring gloves for windy beaches. A hat that stays on in strong wind is more useful than a fashionable one.
