What is the best order for Signal Hill, Cape Spear and Quidi Vidi?

Start at Signal Hill for the harbour views and Cabot Tower, drive south to Cape Spear for the lighthouse and the open Atlantic, then finish in Quidi Vidi village for the harbour and a pint. Together they take about four hours with a chauffeur.

The three places form a natural loop. Signal Hill overlooks the narrow entrance to St. John's harbour. Cape Spear is a short drive down the coast. Quidi Vidi is a small harbour village inside the city limits. According to Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism, Quidi Vidi is a village within the city that captures the spirit of an old fishing outport.

A Signal Hill car service saves the one thing you cannot make more of on this trip: daylight. In autumn and winter, the light fades early, and the wind at the cliffs is strong enough that nobody enjoys waiting for a taxi.

The St. John's airport hub covers the arrivals pickup. For general rates and vehicle sizes, see the limo rates page.

Why a private car suits this city

St. John's is compact, but its best sights are scattered along the coast. A chauffeured car gives you three things the public network does not: a fixed schedule that does not depend on a timetable, luggage storage while you walk, and a warm seat when the fog rolls in.

It also helps when your trip is short. Many visitors reach St. John's on an afternoon flight, wake the next morning for a tight window before a connecting flight or a cruise departure, and need to compress the highlights. A fixed block of hours with one driver is the simplest way to do that.

Signal Hill National Historic Site

Parks Canada runs Signal Hill National Historic Site at 230 Signal Hill Road in St. John's. The official page describes a landmark known for hiking trails, coastal views and Cabot Tower, and notes that it was the location of military battles.

The practical points, as Parks Canada lists them:

  • The grounds are open year-round.
  • Summer-season hours run June 1 to October 9, 2026.
  • Daily visitor fees apply, and admission is free for youth.
  • A North Head Trail is signposted from the site and offers coastal and city views.

Because that season ends on October 9, confirm what is open on your date. Services that run in the summer season, such as the visitor centre and tower access, may be limited afterwards, while the grounds stay open.

Cabot Tower and the Marconi story

The provincial tourism board describes Cabot Tower as built for the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage, and says Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless message on Signal Hill in 1901. Between them, those two facts explain why the hilltop matters beyond the view.

The view is dramatic. You look down on the narrow channel into the harbour, across the city, and out to the Atlantic. The tourism page also points to the Battery, where small colourful wooden homes cling to the cliffs, as a place to hike up through.

Give Signal Hill at least ninety minutes with the tower and a short walk, two hours if you want to take the trail.

Cape Spear Lighthouse

Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site is at 1914–1930 Black Head Road in St. John's. Parks Canada describes it as being on Canada's most easterly point of land and as the home of the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. Guided tours depict life for a light-keeping family in the 1830s, and the site also covers Cape Spear during the Second World War.

It lists icebergs, migrating whales and hunting seabirds among the things visitors may see. Whether you see them depends on the season and the day, and nobody should promise a whale. In practice, the best you can ask of Cape Spear is a clear day, a strong wind and the sense of standing at the edge of the continent.

The season matches Signal Hill's: June 1 to October 9, 2026, with the grounds open all year. Fees are daily and youth are free. The site links to a safety and guidelines section covering weather, environment and seasonal safety, which is worth reading before you set out.

How far is it? The sources vary. The city's tourism information puts it at 17 km from downtown, a road-trip guide at about 15 km and 20 minutes, and an encyclopedic source at roughly 12 km. Plan for 15 to 17 km by road from the centre of town.

Quidi Vidi: the village inside the city

Quidi Vidi is the third leg and the most relaxed. It is a small harbour with fishing stages, narrow lanes and a brewery. The provincial tourism listing describes Quidi Vidi Brewing Company as a craft brewery with a taproom open seven days a week, at 35 Barrows Road. A seasonal boat tour is listed from the village wharf, with dates published for mid-May to mid-October.

Quidi Vidi also sits at the start of the East Coast Trail's Sugarloaf Path, a coastal route of about 8.9 km one way. That is a walk for another day, not for a half-day with a driver, but it shows how much more there is.

The village is on the eastern edge of the city, so the drive from Signal Hill is short. That is why it works as the last stop: you can spend an hour wandering, have a drink or a coffee, and be back at the hotel in minutes.

When to go, and what is open

The Parks Canada hours for both national historic sites run to October 9, 2026, after which the grounds remain open and services change. The tower, the visitor centre and the lighthouse interior are the elements to confirm. If you visit in the shoulder season or winter, expect the grounds and the views and treat any interior access as a bonus.

Weather matters more than the calendar. Fog is common on this coast, and wind can make the cliff tops unpleasant. A day with poor visibility is still worth doing for Quidi Vidi and the harbour, and a flexible chauffeur can swap the order of stops to give the clouds time to lift.

If you are planning a longer stay, our St. John's weekend guide fills in George Street, Jellybean Row and the downtown sights, and our Gros Morne guide covers the road west to Deer Lake.

St. John's airport to Signal Hill: distances and prices

St. John's International Airport is a short drive from the centre. A Signal Hill hotel listing gives about 7.7 to 8 km to the area, and another listing puts the airport 6.2 km from central St. John's. Treat 8 km as the planning figure. Cape Spear is farther, perhaps 20 to 25 km from the airport depending on the route.

Every route above sits inside the distance where the minimum fare applies, so there is no saving in choosing a shorter trip. That is why a combined, hourly booking is better value for the full tour. Figures are before tax, and gratuity is at your discretion. The booker calculates the exact all-in fare for your pickup address.

Flight tracking is included. A domestic arrival comes with thirty minutes of free wait. A name-board greeting in the arrivals hall is an optional extra of $100–$150.

A four-hour sample half-day

  1. 9:00 Pickup at your hotel or at the airport.
  2. 9:30 Signal Hill. Walk the grounds, climb to Cabot Tower if it is open, and take the first photographs while the light is soft.
  3. 11:00 Drive south to Cape Spear.
  4. 11:30 Explore the headland, the lighthouse and the lookouts.
  5. 12:45 Leave for Quidi Vidi.
  6. 13:15 Wander the harbour, have a bite or a pint.
  7. 14:30 Return to the hotel, the airport or the ship.

If you have only three hours, drop either Cape Spear or Quidi Vidi rather than rushing all three. Cape Spear deserves at least an hour on site. Quidi Vidi is the easiest to shorten.

Hourly hire: what it costs

Because the stops are short and close together, hourly hire is the sensible way to book.

Executive Sprinter$240–$295 (3 hr min)$720–$885$960–$1,180

For a couple, four hours in a sedan is $540–$660 for the whole outing. For a family of five or six, the SUV at $700–$840 works out to roughly $115–$140 per person if all six travel.

Wind, fog and safety at the cliffs

Both national historic sites stand on exposed headlands, and the Atlantic here does not behave like a postcard. Hold on to hats, children and phones. Stay on marked paths and away from the edges, particularly when it is wet or foggy. Parks Canada's safety pages exist because conditions change fast.

Wear windproof layers, even in July, and shoes with a grip. If a heavy sea is running, enjoy it from a safe distance. Our chauffeurs will not mind waiting while you add a layer.

Walking the trails

If you have time for one walk, the North Head Trail from Signal Hill gives coastal and city views and is the one Parks Canada highlights. The East Coast Trail's Sugarloaf Path starts in Quidi Vidi and is a much longer commitment of about 8.9 km one way.

A good compromise is a short, supervised stretch, with the car meeting you at the other end. Ask the booker to note the plan in advance so the chauffeur understands where to wait.

Cruise passengers and families

Port days in St. John's are often short, and the major sights are on the eastern headlands. A pre-arranged car lets you fit Signal Hill, Cape Spear and Quidi Vidi into a window of four to five hours, with a margin before all-aboard. Tell the booker the ship and the sailing time.

For families, child seats are free if you request them when you book. The stops involve some walking and uneven ground, so consider how younger children and older guests will manage, and use the tower and lighthouse selectively.

Honest alternatives: taxi, bus tour or rental car

If you are happy to drive, a rental car is the cheapest way to see the three places, and the roads are simple. The trade-off is the parking, the wind and the lack of a driver for the pint in Quidi Vidi.

Taxis are fine for a single destination. Where they struggle is the multi-stop day with waiting time, which is exactly what this itinerary is.
