A Weekend in St. John's: Signal Hill, Jellybean Row and George Street

A St. John's airport limo is a short run, under 10 km to downtown by the airport's own figure. The reward is a compact harbour city with a hill, a cape and a famous street that all fit into two days.

St. John's is among the easiest Canadian cities to see in two days, and one of the hardest to describe without gesturing at a hill. The harbour is a narrow gap in a wall of rock, the streets climb steeply from the water, and the best viewpoints are places where a car helps you get there but not where it stays. A St. John's airport limo is a short transfer, and a chauffeur booked by the hour makes the coastal sights in an afternoon.

This guide gives you a Friday-to-Sunday plan, price ranges, official hours and dates, and an honest look at when the airport's own taxi is the better value.

How do you get from St. John's airport to downtown?

St. John's International Airport is "less than 10 km from the downtown core" by its own description, with about 15 minutes from entering a taxi to checking in at a hotel. Options are the airport's taxi at fixed hotel rates (downtown hotels $35) or a pre-booked chauffeur at $145 to $175 in an Executive Sedan.

The airport is at 100 World Parkway, and its entrance is about 1 km from the highway exit and entrance ramps. At under 10 km, a chauffeured transfer sits at the minimum for each vehicle, so the fare is the same for any downtown or waterfront hotel. A sedan for three is $145 to $175, an SUV for six is $180 to $220 and a Sprinter for 12 to 14 is $295 to $355, before tax and gratuity.

Type your address into the booker for the final all-in figure. The included wait is 60 minutes for international flights and 30 for domestic. An arrivals-hall name board is an extra $100 to $150, and a child seat is free if you mention it when booking.

Airport taxi, honestly compared

The airport's taxi page sets fixed departure rates by destination. For all downtown hotels and B&Bs it is $35. A few other hotels are priced at $21 to $60, and for other locations the fare is the meter rate plus a $5 surcharge. The page also describes City Wide Taxi as the exclusive ground-transportation provider for the public. That means you should treat the pickup details in your booking confirmation as the final word on where your chauffeur meets you, and it is worth asking the airport authority if you have special needs.

If you are alone with a bag and heading to a downtown hotel, the $35 taxi is clearly the better value, and we say so plainly. A chauffeur earns the extra when you want a pre-arranged greeting, travel with a group or luggage, are collecting clients, or plan to hire the car for the day.

Friday evening: George Street and the harbour

Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism describes George Street as "blazing with energy" after dark, with live music, pubs and bars, and the annual George Street Festival as five days and nights of music. It is the place to be on a Friday if you like noise and company.

If you would rather take it slowly, walk down to the harbour. The tourism site invites visitors to look toward the Narrows and imagine the harbour full of fishing schooners. Dinner downtown and an early night are a fine start to a weekend whose best views are in the morning. Because the airport is so close, even a late flight leaves you time to eat, and your driver, who has watched the landing, will already know if you are early. If you plan a very late arrival, ask the restaurant about its closing time before you book the table.

Saturday morning: Signal Hill

Signal Hill National Historic Site is at 230 Signal Hill Road. Parks Canada lists staffed hours for June 1 to October 9, 2026, and states that the grounds are accessible all year round. Daily visitor fees apply, youth admission is free, and the hiking trails, including North Head, offer coastal and city views. Cabot Tower was built to mark the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage to Newfoundland, and the tourism site states that Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless message here in 1901. For a more detailed look at the hill and the nearby cape, see our Signal Hill and Cape Spear guide.

Because the staffed season ends on October 9, anyone reading this in autumn should check the Parks Canada page before relying on the tower or the visitor centre, though the grounds themselves remain open. The North Head trail is among the most requested pages on the Parks Canada site, and it promises coastal and city views, so wear shoes with grip and leave time for the descent, which most people underestimate.

Saturday midday: Cape Spear and Quidi Vidi

Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site, at 1914-1930 Black Head Road, is on Canada's most easterly point of land. It houses the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador, with a look at 19th-century lighthouse keepers' lives. Its staffed season is also June 1 to October 9, 2026, and the grounds are open year-round. Dress for wind and mist, which are as much a part of the cape as the view. Allow at least an hour on site for the lighthouse and the walk, longer if you want photographs. Because the cape juts into the Atlantic, the weather you see from downtown is not always the weather you get when you arrive, so bring the extra layer even on a clear morning.

Quidi Vidi, which Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism calls a "village-within-a-city" that reflects the spirit of an old fishing outport, is a short drive from the downtown core. The Battery, with small coloured wooden houses on cliffs above the sea, is on the route up to Signal Hill.

A half-day coastal loop of Cape Spear, Quidi Vidi and Signal Hill suits an hourly booking. An Executive Sedan at $135 to $165 per hour (two-hour minimum) runs $540 to $660 for four hours before tax, and a Luxury SUV at $175 to $210 per hour is $700 to $840 for four. A driver takes the stress out of narrow, steep streets and changeable weather. If you want the whole day, an eight-hour Executive Sedan booking is $1,080 to $1,320 before tax, and an eight-hour Luxury SUV booking is $1,400 to $1,680; you decide the order of stops, and the meter does not run faster in traffic.

Saturday afternoon: The Rooms

The Rooms is at 9 Bonaventure Avenue and is the province's main art gallery, museum and archives. Its Wednesday hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the "All Hours" page on its site lists the other days. Current exhibitions include 10th Province: Modernizing the 1950s and 1960s, Gathered Leaves: Discoveries from the Drawings Vault (October 3, 2026 to January 3, 2027), Karen Stentaford: Residue (to November 15, 2026) and Patty Boy's Project (to October 25, 2026). Check admission fees on the website before you go. The building also holds the provincial archives and museum collections, so a rainy afternoon here is a good fallback if the coastal viewpoints are fogged in. Plan about two hours, and ask your driver to collect you at the Bonaventure Avenue entrance.

Jellybean Row and the downtown streets

The brightly painted row houses that visitors call Jellybean Row are wedged together along steep hills and hidden alleys. The tourism site notes that the narrow, winding streets were carved out by horse and carriage, which is a useful warning for anyone planning to drive through them. A walking loop from George Street, down to the harbour and back up through the old streets, is rewarding and mostly free.

Drop-offs on steep streets

Signal Hill above St. John's harbour
Signal Hill above St. John's harbour
  • George Street: it is busy after dark, so agree a nearby corner for drop-off and pickup.
  • Signal Hill: roads reach the hilltop, but trails are walking only.
  • Cape Spear: your driver can drop you at the entrance and wait while you walk.
  • Downtown's narrow streets: the hills are steep, so a car saves a long walk uphill.
  • The Rooms: on Bonaventure Avenue, with curbside access nearby.

Whales, icebergs and coastal trails

Tourism NL features whale watching and iceberg viewing as top activities, and the province advertises 29,000 kilometres of coastline. We do not quote dates or sightings, because they are not predictable. A good rule is to ask the tour operator what to expect and to keep a buffer day if iceberg viewing is on your list.

Going further: Gros Morne

A weekend in St. John's does not stretch to western Newfoundland, which is a day-plus journey. If Gros Morne is on your list, read our Gros Morne guide, which explains access via Deer Lake and how long to plan. It is a separate trip rather than an add-on.

Weather and what to wear

The weather is part of the experience. Wind, fog and sudden rain are normal, so a waterproof jacket, shoes with grip and layers are worth more than any sightseeing pass. In winter, hills can be slippery and some viewpoints may be difficult to reach, so check conditions before you travel.

Families, groups and accessibility

Request a child seat at booking and it is free of charge. A Luxury SUV is the best match for a family of five, and the Executive Sprinter seats 12 to 14 for weddings, conferences or sports groups. The fleet page shows each vehicle. If wheelchair access is needed, say so in the booking so we can confirm availability; the airport also lists accessible taxi providers on its website. For a celebration, a stretch limousine seats 8 to 10 and is $225 to $300 per hour with a three-hour minimum, which is a popular way to see the city at dusk before an evening on George Street. For a larger party, a mini-coach or party bus seats 20 to 30 and is $300 to $420 per hour with a four-hour minimum.

A sample weekend plan

  • Friday: YYT arrival, hotel check-in, harbour walk, George Street.
  • Saturday: Signal Hill and Cape Spear in the morning, Quidi Vidi and lunch, The Rooms in the afternoon, dinner downtown.
  • Sunday: a slow breakfast, Jellybean Row walk, then the return to the airport with a cushion of at least 90 minutes for a domestic flight.

If you are building a longer trip, the airports overview lists every airport we serve, the airport limo guide explains how transfers work, limo service covers tours and events by the hour, and the FAQ answers the usual booking questions. For airport details, see the St. John's airport limo page, and the limo rates page has the hourly card.
