Gros Morne National Park car service: reaching the west coast of Newfoundland
Gros Morne National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the west coast of Newfoundland, known for fjords, mountains, beaches, bogs and sea cliffs. Parks Canada highlights three experiences above the rest: the Tablelands, a rare outcrop of the Earth's mantle; a boat tour on Western Brook Pond, a glacier-carved, landlocked fjord; and the Gros Morne Mountain hike, a challenging 17 km loop. Each one depends on a good plan for getting there.
Our nearest hub is St. John's, but this park is a long way from it, and the honest first piece of advice is not to drive between them in a day unless you want a road trip. Most travellers fly to Deer Lake and arrange a transfer or a rental car from there. This guide covers both routes, the park's key sites, fees, timing and the alternatives. Prices are ranges in Canadian dollars with the distance and drive time beside each trip. Once you enter your addresses, the booker shows the all-in fare, so treat the ranges as planning figures.
How far is Gros Morne from the airport?

Parks Canada puts Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF) 35 km from the park's southern boundary, and the park about 30 minutes from the airport. Rocky Harbour, the main village, is roughly 55 km from the airport by tourism sources. St. John's is about 700 km away.
The official Gros Morne getting here page lists Deer Lake as the nearest airport, with direct daily flights from Montreal (May to October), Toronto, Halifax and St. John's, and several car rental agencies on site. Bus services run from the town of Deer Lake to the park.
Port aux Basques, where the Marine Atlantic ferry from North Sydney arrives year-round, is about 300 km from the southern park boundary and roughly four hours by road. Argentia, on the east coast, receives ferries from mid-June to late September after an 11-hour crossing. St. John's International (YYT) serves the east coast, and intra-provincial flights connect St. John's with Deer Lake.
Price ranges: Deer Lake, Rocky Harbour and St. John's
Distances here come from Parks Canada and published tourism guides, and the longer figures vary by source. The St. John's distance uses 700 km, the most cited figure; Deer Lake itself is about 637 km from St. John's, according to one source, and a drive of 7 to 8.5 hours is typical in normal traffic.

Fares are before tax and gratuity, with the minimum applying to any short trip. Remote pickups depend on availability, so enter your exact address in the booker and it will confirm. See the St. John's airport page for how pickups work in the province's capital, and the rate card for hourly day charters in the park.
The Tablelands
The Tablelands are a rare place where the Earth's mantle is exposed at the surface. Parks Canada lists them as one of the park's must-see features. The landscape is rust-coloured and almost barren, in sharp contrast to the green hills around it, and it changes in different light, so an early or late visit is often the most striking.
The Tablelands lie in the southern part of the park, reached by the road that serves the southern reaches. Check the Parks Canada page for the current trail and parking details. A driver can drop you at the trailhead and wait or pick you up at an agreed time.
Western Brook Pond and the boat tour
Western Brook Pond is a landlocked fjord with steep cliffs. To reach the dock, you walk a moderate 3 km trail from the parking lot, about 45 minutes one way according to Parks Canada. The surface is wide, mostly flat and firm, and Parks Canada offers a free all-terrain wheelchair to borrow.
The boat tour runs from mid-May to mid-October, according to Parks Canada, and departures depend on wind and weather. Reservations are recommended with the operator, BonTours, which has a ticket office on Pond Road in Rocky Harbour. Fares for 2026 were not clearly published when we checked, so confirm with the operator rather than trusting a number from a review.
Plan your timing carefully. You may be asked to arrive at the parking lot an hour before departure to make the walk, and one traveller report describes a mid-June departure cancelled because of fog. Keep your schedule flexible, and check the Parks Canada Western Brook Pond page before you book.
Gros Morne Mountain
The Gros Morne Mountain hike is a challenging 17 km loop and is described by Parks Canada as a full day. The mountain is closed to hikers from 1 May to 28 June to protect wildlife. If you want to attempt it, plan for a full day, start early, carry water and a rain layer, and tell someone your route. A chauffeur can drop you at the trailhead and collect you when you return. Cell reception on the trails is unreliable, so a fixed pickup time matters.

Fees, opening hours and seasons
Gros Morne is open year-round. Peak season runs from May to October, and the low season from October to May. Regular fees applied again on 8 September 2026 after the Canada Strong Pass free-admission period ended. The Discovery Pass, which covers national parks across the country, is $83.50 for an adult, $71.50 for a senior and $167.50 for a family or group, as shown on Parks Canada's fee pages for other parks, and youth are free.
Parks Canada's Gros Morne page is the place to confirm closures. When we checked, it listed the visitor centre and Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse as closing temporarily during power outages on 7 and 8 October, which is a reminder that services in a remote park can change with little notice.
A practical two-day plan from Deer Lake
- Day one, morning: Land at Deer Lake. Pick up your driver or rental car. The drive to the southern boundary is 35 km.
- Day one, afternoon: Visit the Tablelands, then continue to Rocky Harbour for the night.
- Day two, morning: Drive to the Western Brook Pond parking lot, walk 3 km to the dock and take the boat tour.
- Day two, afternoon: Return the same way and head back to Deer Lake or onward.

If you add Gros Morne Mountain, make it a third day. It will not fit with the boat tour on the same afternoon.
A private day charter keeps luggage and the vehicle at hand. On the hourly rate, a sedan is $135–$165, an SUV $175–$210 and a Sprinter $240–$295, with minimums of two hours on cars and three on the Sprinter. Budget about $1,080–$1,320 for eight hours in a sedan, or $1,400–$1,680 in an SUV, before tax.
Combining Gros Morne with St. John's and the east coast
If you are flying into St. John's, you can see the east coast first. Our guide to Signal Hill and Cape Spear covers the headlands near the capital, and our St. John's weekend guide covers the city. Then fly to Deer Lake for the west coast rather than driving the full width of the island.
If you are coming from Nova Scotia by ferry, the crossing from North Sydney to Port aux Basques takes about six hours and arrives about 300 km from the southern boundary. Our guide to the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton is a natural pairing for a Maritimes and Newfoundland trip.
Weather and what to wear
Newfoundland weather changes quickly. The west coast gets wind off the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and fog can close in on the water and the cliffs. Wear layers, bring a waterproof jacket and wear sturdy shoes for the Western Brook Pond trail. At the Tablelands, wind can be strong with little shelter. In winter, expect snow and cold, and check road conditions before driving.

Bring insect repellent in early summer, a hat, water and snacks. The 3 km walk to the Western Brook Pond dock is long enough to need them.
Driving safety in Newfoundland
Newfoundland highways cross long stretches with no services, and wildlife on the road is a real risk at dawn and dusk. Keep your speed down after dark and never rely on being able to stop quickly. A professional driver scans the verges and takes it slowly at night. Fill your tank before long stretches and carry water.
If you rent a car instead, add the time to collect it at Deer Lake and allow for one-way drop fees if you return elsewhere.
