Is a Thousand Islands day trip from Ottawa worth doing by private car?
Yes, if you want to cruise without driving. Gananoque is about 150 to 165 km from Ottawa, under two hours each way, and a chauffeur drops you at the dock. A sedan one way costs roughly $700–$915 before tax. Hourly hire is usually better for a return day.
Gananoque sits on the St. Lawrence River, and its dock is the departure point for the best-known boat tours of the Thousand Islands. The route out of Ottawa is a quiet highway run, which is exactly why a private car works: nobody has to concentrate on navigation after a boat day, a lunch, or a glass of wine in town.
If you are coming from the capital, our Ottawa airport hub and the Ottawa train station page explain where the car meets you. Rates and vehicle sizes are on the limo rates page.
The Gananoque limo service we describe here is a ground service to the dock and back. The boat is the operator's; we do not run cruises, and we do not pretend to.
What a Gananoque limo day actually looks like
Most of the day is structured around one fixed time: the departure printed on your cruise ticket. Everything else bends around it.

The cruise operator at Gananoque is City Cruises, which lists its Gananoque dock at 280 Main Street on its contact page. It also lists a second dock at 95 Ivy Lea Road in Lansdowne, from which its Landmarks of the 1000 Islands cruise departs. The operator's pages show a 1-hour cruise from Gananoque, a 3-hour cruise from Gananoque, a 1-hour cruise from Ivy Lea, a 5-hour Boldt Castle stopover cruise from Gananoque and private charters.
A chauffeured day therefore usually runs like this: pickup in Ottawa mid-morning, arrival at Main Street with a comfortable margin, the cruise, a late lunch in town, and the drive home in the afternoon or evening. The car waits or returns for you, depending on how you book.
Ottawa to Gananoque by chauffeured car
Two official sources disagree slightly on the distance, and both are correct for their route. The Town of Gananoque's own location page lists Ottawa at 165 km. Its investment profile puts the town about 150 km from Ottawa by Highway 416 and the 401. Plan on 150 to 165 km, depending on where in Ottawa you start, and a drive of under two hours without traffic.
| From | Distance | Drive | Sedan (3 pax) | Luxury SUV (6 pax) | Sprinter (12–14 pax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ottawa, one way | 150–165 km | about 1 h 45 min | $700–$915 | $880–$1,165 | $1,240–$1,635 |
| Toronto, one way | 292 km | about 3 h | $1,360–$1,620 | $1,710–$2,060 | $2,410–$2,890 |
All figures are before tax, tolls extra where they apply, and gratuity is at your discretion. The Toronto distance is the figure the town gives for its own location. The drive times are planning estimates for light traffic; the booker calculates the exact all-in fare for your pickup and drop-off addresses.
For a return day trip, one-way transfers add up fast. If you want the car to stay with you, an hourly booking can be neater. A nine-hour day covers about two hours each way plus a three-hour cruise and lunch.
| Vehicle | Hourly range | Nine-hour day |
|---|---|---|
| Executive Sedan | $135–$165 per hr | $1,215–$1,485 |
| Luxury SUV | $175–$210 per hr | $1,575–$1,890 |
| Executive Sprinter | $240–$295 per hr | $2,160–$2,655 |
Split between guests, the hourly option looks better than most people expect. For six people in an SUV, the nine-hour range works out to about $265–$315 each.
Starting from Toronto instead
The town lists Toronto at 292 km from Gananoque, which is a long single day for most travellers. A chauffeur makes it more bearable, because the car doubles as a lounge on the highway. Even so, we would suggest staying overnight in Gananoque or Kingston and travelling back the next morning.

If you are flying into Toronto, our Pearson airport limo page shows how the pickup works at the terminals. A Pearson arrival followed by a four-hour highway drive is tiring after a long-haul flight. If your schedule is flexible, rest on day one and cruise on day two.
Choosing a cruise: which one suits whom
The operator's own page names these main experiences.
- 1-hour 1000 Islands cruise from Gananoque. The simplest option, and the one to choose when the weather is uncertain or you have children.
- 1-hour cruise from Ivy Lea. Same duration, from the other dock at 95 Ivy Lea Road.
- 3-hour cruise from Gananoque. A proper outing for a half-day, with time to settle in and watch the shoreline.
- 5-hour Boldt Castle stopover cruise. The only one named as stopping at the castle, which is on the American side of the river.
- Private charters. Available for groups who want their own sailing.
The page does not state the stopover length, the castle admission, or whether entry is included in the cruise price. Ask the operator before you book. It also mentions that tickets bought through its assurance programme can be rescheduled or refunded up to two hours before boarding, but not on select experiences, so read the terms for your specific sailing.
The operator's cruise pages do not state season dates. Confirm that sailings are running on your travel date, especially if you are travelling in late autumn.
Boldt Castle: the border note you need before you book
George C. Boldt built the castle in the early 1900s as a summer home, and it is now open to visitors with guided tours, gardens and a museum. It is also in the United States, on the American side of the river, which means a stopover is an international crossing even though you are only on a boat.

This is the single most important planning point in the whole article. Our chauffeured car stays on the Canadian side and meets you at the dock. We do not drive you to the castle, because the castle is reached by water. What you must organise is your own travel documents.
What documents does the Government of Canada say you need?
The Government of Canada's travel advice for the United States lists the following for Canadian citizens at land or water crossings.
- Age 16 and older: a valid passport or a Trusted Traveler Program card, valid for the whole stay.
- Age 15 and under: a passport, an original or copy of a birth certificate, or an original Canadian citizenship certificate.
- Children under 19 in a school or organised group: written consent from a parent or guardian.
The same page says entry rules can change and recommends verifying them with U.S. authorities. Treat that sentence seriously. If you are a permanent resident, a visitor to Canada, or hold another nationality, your requirements differ again, and the operator and the U.S. authorities are the ones to ask.
We suggest carrying a passport for every member of the party, even for children for whom a birth certificate might technically be enough. A passport is the one document nobody argues with.
If you have no intention of landing at the castle, ask the operator how each sailing is routed, since only the stopover cruise is named as stopping there.
A timetable for a one-day return from Ottawa
Here is an example for the three-hour cruise. Adjust the times to your own sailing.

- 8:15 Pickup in Ottawa. The vehicle carries bags, jackets and any child seat you requested at booking.
- 10:00 Arrive at Main Street in Gananoque, with at least thirty minutes in hand for a kerbside drop-off, a coffee and a walk to the boarding area.
- 10:45 Cruise departs.
- 13:45 Cruise returns. Lunch in town.
- 15:30 Car leaves for Ottawa.
- 17:15 Arrive in Ottawa.
For a five-hour Boldt Castle sailing, shift everything an hour or two later and expect a return in the evening. Tell the booker the sailing time so the chauffeur does not plan a pickup that clashes with your return to the dock.
What to do in Gananoque between sailings
The dock is at 280 Main Street, so the downtown is on your doorstep. The town describes itself as close to the American border, with Interstate 81 only 15 km away. There is no need for a car for the walk from the dock to a restaurant, which is why many parties release the chauffeur during the cruise and ask for a later pickup. If you prefer to keep the car on hold, hourly rates apply.
Adding Kingston to the day
Kingston lies along the same corridor. Visit Kingston lists a range of attractions, from heritage sites and museums to cruises and tours, and its listings include Kingston Pen Tours, which are seasonal. Kingston 1000 Islands Cruises is another operator, with a separate departure point from the Gananoque boats. Check each venue's dates before building a stop around it.
A common combined plan is a morning cruise at Gananoque followed by an afternoon in Kingston, then the drive home from Kingston. Kingston is a short run from Gananoque, roughly 30 km, so the added transfer sits at the minimum. Ask for the Kingston stop in your booking notes so the fare reflects the actual route.
Season, weather and what to wear
The river is cooler than the town and the wind is stronger on the water. A light waterproof jacket is useful from spring to autumn, and layers matter more than a heavy coat. The deck can be wet. Shoes with a grip are better than leather soles.
If you plan to land at Boldt Castle, allow extra time for the border process and carry documents in a dry pocket. In autumn, daylight is shorter, so choose a morning departure and avoid a late sailing if you have a long drive home.
Groups, families and access
The operator maintains an accessibility page for its Gananoque cruises, so ask them about boarding for wheelchairs and strollers. For our part, child seats are free when you request them at booking, and a Sprinter handles parties of up to 12 to 14 passengers with bags. Remember that the stopover cruise may involve walking at the castle. If someone in the party has mobility concerns, choose the 1-hour or 3-hour sailing.
Honest alternatives to a private car
A rental car is the cheapest way to reach Gananoque if you enjoy driving and have a licensed driver who does not want a drink at lunch. Intercity train and bus services serve the Ottawa to Kingston corridor, and you would still need a taxi or a long walk to the dock. Check current schedules before you plan around them.
| Option | Cost | Door-to-door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car | lowest for 3–4 people, plus fuel and parking | about 2 h each way | confident drivers happy to stay sober |
| Train or bus plus taxi | moderate | longer, with transfers | solo travellers on a budget |
| Private tour from Ottawa | ticketed, fixed itinerary | set by the operator | first-timers wanting a guide |
| Chauffeured car | $700–$915 one way or $135–$165 per hour | about 1 h 45 min each way | couples, families, groups, wine at lunch |
If you are alone and cost is the main concern, a rental car or public transport beats a limousine. Where the car pays off is the group trip, the anniversary, and the guest who would rather watch the river than the road.
Booking notes
Add your sailing time, the dock you are using and the number of bags when you book. If anyone in the party is boarding the Boldt Castle sailing, mention it so the pickup time allows for early check-in. For a return day, choose between two one-way legs and an hourly block. The online booker shows both and gives the exact fare.
