How do you spend a weekend in Ottawa?
Use Saturday for Parliament Hill, the National Gallery and the Canadian Museum of History, which sits across the river in Gatineau. Spend Friday night in the ByWard Market and Sunday on the canal, in Gatineau Park or on a slower brunch before your departure.
The capital is one of the easiest Canadian cities for a short stay. The key sights are concentrated downtown, within sight of the Ottawa River, and the biggest museum on your list is on the other bank. Ottawa Tourism describes festivals "almost every weekend" and a strong autumn campaign built around outdoor activities, restaurants and world-renowned museums, so there is rarely a dead weekend.
What makes a car useful is the geography. The airport is on the south side. The Museum of History is in another province. The ByWard Market, the Hill and the Gallery are walkable from one another, but the walk home after dinner in cold weather is another matter. Our Ottawa airport hub explains the pickup, and the Ottawa train station page covers rail arrivals.
Arriving: the airport, the train and the FBO
Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport lies south of downtown. Sources give roughly 10 to 15 km, depending on the starting point, with a typical drive of 15 to 25 minutes. Treat 13 km as the planning figure.

The airport's own ground transportation page lists several options. Route 105 runs 24 hours a day, every 30 minutes, between Uplands Drive, which serves the airport, and St-Laurent Station. The O-Train Line 4 runs from 6:00 a.m. to midnight between the airport station and South Keys station, and the station connects to Level 3 of the terminal at its north end. The taxi queue forms outside the centre door on Level 1. Pre-arranged vehicles, such as luxury cars, use Pillars 12 and 13.
Those are useful facts for the honest comparison below. For a chauffeured arrival, the booker gives the exact meeting instructions, and the driver tracks your flight.
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Typical drive | Sedan (3 pax) | Luxury SUV (6 pax) | Sprinter (12–14 pax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YOW to a downtown or ByWard hotel | about 13 km | 15–25 min | $145–$175 | $180–$220 | $295–$355 |
| Ottawa station to Parliament Hill area | under 6 km | 10–15 min | $145–$175 | $180–$220 | $295–$355 |
| Downtown to Canadian Museum of History | under 5 km | 5–15 min | $145–$175 | $180–$220 | $295–$355 |
Each trip sits at the minimum fare, before tax and with gratuity at your discretion. A domestic arrival includes thirty minutes of free waiting, and an international one includes sixty. Private-jet guests should look at the Ottawa FBO page.
Where to stay
Most weekend visitors want to be near the Hill and the ByWard Market. Ottawa Tourism's neighbourhood page calls the ByWard Market district nearly as old as the city itself, and the heart of Ottawa, and it mentions the Fairmont Château Laurier overlooking Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal. Staying close means most of Saturday is on foot, and the car is for the airport and the evenings.
If you prefer a quieter base, the neighbourhoods around the canal are calmer, though farther from the Gallery. Tell the booker your hotel name, and check if it has a separate courtyard entrance for vehicles.
Friday evening: the ByWard Market
The ByWard Market runs along and around Rideau Street. Ottawa Tourism lists the ByWard Market Hall for eateries, and Clarendon Courtyard, a 19th-century cobblestone square with several restaurants. Among the names it mentions are Zak's Diner, Benny's Bistro and The King Eddy for breakfast, Chez Lucien for burgers and La Bottega Nicastro for sandwiches. The original Beavertails stand opened in 1973.

An outdoor farmers' market runs from May to October. In the colder months the district is still lively indoors. The CF Rideau Centre on Rideau Street is Ottawa's largest shopping mall with over 180 retailers.
Friday night is for a relaxed dinner within walking distance. If the weather is poor, an hourly car for two hours is $270–$330 in a sedan or $350–$420 in an SUV, before tax.
Saturday morning: Parliament Hill
Parliament Hill's visitor offer has been in transition because Centre Block is closed for a major renovation. Ottawa Tourism's Parliament Hill page, updated in August 2026, lists the following.
- House of Commons tours at West Block. Guided tours start at the underground Visitor Welcome Centre between West Block and Centre Block.
- The Senate of Canada Building. At 2 Rideau Street, this was built in 1912 as Ottawa's train station and now temporarily houses the Senate.
- East Block. Free tours of four heritage rooms, offered only in the summer months.
- Parliament: The Immersive Experience. A self-guided 360-degree multimedia exhibition of about 45 minutes about the Centre Block.
Tours are free to book online for the House of Commons and the Senate, with walk-up tickets first-come, first-served. Everyone must pass security screening similar to an airport, and tours depend on parliamentary activity. Check the official booking site for the current schedule, and carry government-issued photo ID in case it is requested.
Our Parliament Hill guide covers the grounds, and the Canada Day in Ottawa guide covers the biggest day of the year.
Saturday afternoon: the National Gallery and the Museum of History
The two big museums sit on opposite banks of the river.

National Gallery of Canada. It is at 380 Sussex Drive, on the edge of the ByWard Market district. The gallery's hours page lists a schedule from September 14, 2026 to March 31, 2027 in which Mondays are closed. Thursday evenings are open late, until 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Monday, October 12, 2026, is listed as an exception, open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Confirm hours at gallery.ca, since schedules shift.
Canadian Museum of History. According to its plan-your-visit page, it is at 100 Laurier Street, Gatineau, on the Ottawa River directly opposite Parliament Hill. For September 8 to December 9, 2026, the museum lists Monday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. All visitors need a timed ticket. The adult price is $25 before tax, and booking online saves 10%. The indoor garage is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., costing $2 per half hour to a daily maximum of $18, with a maximum vehicle height of 1.93 metres. The Panorama Café has views of the river and Parliament Hill.
The border between the two provinces is the river, which means the museum is a 10-minute drive from the Hill but an awkward walk in bad weather. That is where a car shines. Tell the booker if you intend to cross, so the pickup point is on the right side of the water.
Saturday evening
Dinner in the ByWard Market or along Sussex Drive is the natural finish. If you have time, walk by the Hill after dark. A late hourly booking keeps the car near the restaurant, and the driver can drop you at the hotel door.
Sunday: Gatineau Park or a slow morning
Gatineau Park, in Quebec, is the capital's backyard wilderness, and it is the classic Sunday alternative. Our Gatineau Park guide covers the lookout, the estate and the fall colours. A four-hour hourly booking is $540–$660 in a sedan and $700–$840 in an SUV, before tax.

If you would rather stay in town, a slow Sunday morning in the ByWard Market, a visit to the museum you missed on Saturday, and a late lunch is a good plan. If you have a full extra day, our Thousand Islands guide explains the cruise day out of Gananoque, about 150 to 165 km from Ottawa.
In winter: the Rideau Canal Skateway and Winterlude
Ottawa in winter has one signature experience. The National Capital Commission says the Rideau Canal Skateway is 7.8 km long and typically runs from January to early March, weather permitting. When it is open it is free and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the NCC publishes ice conditions on a separate page.
Winterlude's 49th edition is listed on Canada.ca for 29 January to 15 February 2027. The Skateway and Winterlude sites are not always the same, so check the Canada.ca page for the current programme. See our Winterlude guide for more.
In deep cold, a car matters more than any other time of year. Skating is hard on the legs, evening temperatures drop quickly, and the walk back from the ice to a hotel may be longer than you expect. Plan a pickup at an access point, and keep a flexible window because ice conditions can change the plan.
Ottawa in other seasons
Autumn. Ottawa Tourism's autumn campaign highlights outdoor activities, restaurants and museums. Gatineau Park's colours are a major draw.
Spring and summer. The farmers' market in the ByWard runs May to October, the East Block tours run in summer, and the festival calendar fills. Remembrance Day on 11 November has its own logistics, covered in our Remembrance Day guide.
Winter. The Skateway, Winterlude and the indoor museums. Wear proper boots.
What a chauffeured weekend costs
This sample uses an arrival transfer, a three-hour Saturday, a two-hour Saturday evening, a four-hour Sunday and a departure transfer.
| Segment | Executive Sedan | Luxury SUV |
|---|---|---|
| Friday: YOW to downtown, about 13 km | $145–$175 | $180–$220 |
| Saturday, 3 hours | $405–$495 | $525–$630 |
| Saturday evening, 2 hours | $270–$330 | $350–$420 |
| Sunday, 4 hours | $540–$660 | $700–$840 |
| Sunday: hotel to YOW | $145–$175 | $180–$220 |
| Weekend total | $1,505–$1,835 | $1,935–$2,330 |
Figures are before tax, with gratuity at your discretion. Drop the evening block if dinner is nearby, and subtract the amounts shown. See the limo rates page for the minimums and the fleet page for vehicles.
Honest alternatives: Route 105, the O-Train and a taxi
The airport's own page lists Route 105 and the O-Train Line 4, and those are real options. If you are one person with light baggage and a downtown hotel, public transit is much cheaper. The trade-off is time and transfers.
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 105 bus (24 hours) | transit fare | longer, with a transfer | solo, budget, late arrivals |
| O-Train Line 4 (6 a.m.–midnight) | transit fare | a short ride to South Keys, then a transfer | travellers heading to the south or central line |
| Taxi from Level 1 queue | moderate | 15–25 min | one or two travellers |
| Chauffeured car | $145–$175 per sedan transfer, or $135–$165 per hour | 15–25 min, door to door | luggage, groups, winter nights, tight schedules |
If your hotel is on a rail line and you have a small bag, transit wins on cost. If there are two or three of you, it is winter, or you land late, a chauffeur is a calmer way to begin the weekend.
Families, groups and accessibility
Ottawa suits families because most of the big attractions are free or timed. The Museum of History requires a timed ticket for everyone, so book it before the weekend. Parliament tours are free but depend on the sitting calendar, and security screening takes time with small children and bags, so arrive early.
For a family of five or six, a Luxury SUV carries bags and strollers. Larger groups, such as a family reunion or a school-age sports team, fit a Sprinter. A child seat requested at booking carries no charge. If someone in your party uses a wheelchair, ask each venue about step-free entrances before you finalise the order of the day, and tell the booker so the drop-off points can be chosen to match.
The Museum of History's garage has a maximum vehicle height of 1.93 metres, which matters for tall vans but not for our sedans and SUVs. The chauffeur can also set you down at the main entrance and park separately, which avoids the $18 daily garage maximum on long visits.
Planning notes
Book Parliament tours first, then fit the museums around them. Confirm each museum's hours the week of your trip. Tell the booker if you intend to cross to Gatineau. And keep a spare hour on Sunday for traffic on the way to the airport.
