A Weekend in Edmonton: Ice District, River Valley and West Edmonton Mall

An Edmonton airport limo matters more than in most cities, because the airport sits about 30 km south of downtown. This weekend plan builds around that drive, then covers the Ice District, the river valley and West Edmonton Mall.

Edmonton is a spread-out city, and the first thing every visitor learns is that distances here are longer than they look on a map. The airport is south of the city, downtown is north of the river, Old Strathcona is across the High Level Bridge, and West Edmonton Mall is out on the west side. That geography is exactly why an Edmonton airport limo or a chauffeur on the clock suits a short stay: you cover three or four districts without parking once.

This is a plan for a Friday-to-Sunday visit. It covers the airport run, the downtown core around the Ice District, the cultural cluster on Churchill Square, a river-valley afternoon, the mall, and the honest case for cheaper transport when it fits.

How far is Edmonton airport from downtown, and what does a limo cost?

Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is roughly 30 km from downtown, a 30 to 35 minute drive when roads are clear. A chauffeured Executive Sedan is $145 to $175, a Luxury SUV is $180 to $220, and an Executive Sprinter is $295 to $355, before tax and gratuity.

The distance is the reason fares here are higher than for a short city run. At about 30 km, the airport transfer lands at the minimum-transfer band for each vehicle rather than a per-kilometre calculation, so the quote is the same whether your hotel is near Rogers Place or by the legislature grounds. If you are travelling for meetings, ask for the Sedan; for four to six people with bags, take the Luxury SUV.

What you get for the fare: the driver tracks your flight, waits up to 30 minutes after a domestic landing or 60 minutes after an international one, and takes you door to door. A name-board meet-and-greet inside the arrivals hall is an add-on of $100 to $150. Child seats are free if you ask at booking.

Where the airport's own pickup rules put you

Edmonton's airport publishes a clear map of its Arrivals level. Taxis and limousines load curbside outside Door 9. Rideshare drivers use a paid zone outside Door 10 and cannot be hailed in person, so you must request the ride in the app. The ground-transportation office is near Door 7, and rental agencies are on the parkade's ground level near Door 8. A separate on-airport transit shuttle outside Door 9 covers Airport City, not downtown.

The airport lists flat rates to downtown Edmonton of $62 for a taxi and $71 for a limousine. That is real money saved if all you need is a seat to a hotel, and it is worth saying plainly. What our fixed fare adds is a pre-arranged driver whose job is to watch your flight, a larger vehicle for luggage or a group, and a single price you can show your accountant. If none of that matters to you, the airport's flat rate is the sensible choice.

The airport's page sends travellers who want the 747 bus to the City of Edmonton for route details and fares, and that is where to check the schedule before you rely on it.

Friday evening: the Ice District

Downtown Edmonton's evening address is the Ice District around Rogers Place, at 10220 104 Avenue NW. The arena hosts the Edmonton Oilers and Oil Kings, concerts and special events, and the arena's own calendar is the first thing to check before you book dinner nearby. As of this week it lists the Canadian Finals Rodeo from October 7 to 10, an Oilers game on October 15, a UFC Fight Night on October 17 and the PBR Canada National Finals on November 13 and 14. The 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship is scheduled for December 26, 2026 to January 5, 2027.

On an event night, the useful thing is where your car stops. Hotels and restaurants around the district are walkable from one another, but arena exits create queues for rides. A chauffeur booked for the end of the evening waits where you agree, rather than wherever a ride app sends you to stand. If you are coming for a game, see our wider guide to arena nights in Canadian cities, which compares arrival and exit logistics in several buildings.

Saturday morning: Churchill Square and the Royal Alberta Museum

Sir Winston Churchill Square is the downtown cultural cluster. The Art Gallery of Alberta is at 2 Sir Winston Churchill Square and keeps these hours: closed Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Friday to Sunday. A "Free Entry Thursday" programme is mentioned on the gallery's calendar, so confirm the details if you plan around it.

The Royal Alberta Museum is at 9810 103a Avenue NW, a short walk or drive away. Its current features include Chez nous: la francophonie de l'Alberta and Stories of Us, with a hockey gallery titled Hockey: Faster Than Ever scheduled to open on November 26. Check the Visit page for hours and admission, which the museum updates seasonally.

Saturday afternoon: the river valley and Fort Edmonton Park

Edmonton's river valley is the city's defining feature, running through the middle of town along the North Saskatchewan River. Fort Edmonton Park sits within it, at 7000 143 Street NW, on 158 acres of wooded parkland. The park describes itself as a nonprofit that began as a Canada Centennial reconstruction project in 1967, and it runs DARK, its Halloween festival, from October 2 to 31, 2026. The park's pages separate summer from fall and winter hours, so check the right one before you drive out.

A chauffeur is helpful here because the valley is vast and the car park for a given trail may not be the one nearest your lunch. Tell your driver the trailhead or attraction, not the neighbourhood, and the route is straightforward. If you want a wilder half day, Elk Island National Park is a short drive east and is covered in its own guide.

Where a car helps, and where it does not

Walterdale Bridge lit up at night in Edmonton
Walterdale Bridge lit up at night in Edmonton
  • Rogers Place: event nights close nearby streets. Arrange an exact pickup point with your driver before the final whistle.
  • Churchill Square: drop-offs work on the surrounding streets, and the square itself is for people on foot.
  • Old Strathcona: walkable once you arrive, but parking is tight on busy evenings, which is why dropping off at the corner you choose is the cleaner plan.
  • West Edmonton Mall: the mall has garage and valet parking, so a chauffeur can wait for you or return at an agreed time.
  • Fort Edmonton Park: your car can drop you at the entrance, so there is no need to hunt for parking before you walk in.

Sunday: West Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall is at 8882 170 Street NW. Its official site lists 800-plus stores and services, more than 100 dining options and a general mall opening of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The attractions include Galaxyland, World Waterpark, the Ice Palace, Marine Life, DRIVE Go Karts, Ed's Bowling, Splatterverse, The Ship, Birds of Paradise and two mini-golf courses. There are two on-site or nearby hotels, the Fantasyland Hotel and the WEM Inn.

A common Sunday plan is a late breakfast downtown and then a few hours at the mall, with an Executive Sedan on the hourly rate of $135 to $165 (two-hour minimum). A three-hour block is $405 to $495 before tax. If you are shopping for gifts and large items, a Luxury SUV at $175 to $210 per hour has the cargo space. Ask for a driver who will wait at the valet area so you never carry bags to the far side of a parkade.

Old Strathcona, Whyte Avenue and the Fringe

Old Strathcona, south of the river, is where Edmonton's theatre culture lives. The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival normally runs for 11 days in August, with more than 200 productions across 37-plus venues, and the Fringe Theatre Arts Barns at 10330 84 Avenue NW sit in the heart of the district. The next festival dates published are August 12 to 22, 2027. Our Edmonton Fringe guide explains pickup and drop-off for that busy fortnight.

Outside festival time, Old Strathcona is a pleasant place for brunch, bookshops and a walk. If you are staying downtown, a car across the river is a short hop that depends mostly on traffic.

Combining Edmonton with the Rockies

Many visitors use Edmonton as the northern gateway to the mountains. Jasper is the usual destination, and we cover the park in the Jasper National Park guide and the road in the Icefields Parkway guide. That is a full-day or overnight journey rather than something to squeeze into a weekend, but it is worth knowing the airport transfer can be extended to a one-way mountain run, which is priced per kilometre on the rate card.

Families, groups and accessibility

Child seats are free when you request them at booking. A Luxury SUV takes six passengers and five to six large bags, which is the right vehicle for a family arriving with strollers. For a group of eight or more, such as a hockey weekend or a wedding party, the Executive Sprinter seats 12 to 14. Our fleet page shows each vehicle.

If someone in your party needs a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, say so at booking so we can confirm availability. The Art Gallery of Alberta, West Edmonton Mall and the Royal Alberta Museum all publish accessibility details on their sites.

Weather and what to wear

Edmonton's seasons are real. Winters are cold and dry, summers are long and bright, and autumn can bring a first snowfall earlier than visitors expect. If you land in winter, ask your driver to meet you at the curb with the car already warmed up; it is a small courtesy that makes a large difference in January. In summer, the river valley is at its best and patios fill early, so book dinner reservations ahead of time.

A sample weekend schedule

  • Saturday: Art Gallery of Alberta or the Royal Alberta Museum in the morning; lunch downtown; Fort Edmonton Park or a river-valley walk in the afternoon; theatre or dinner in Old Strathcona.
  • Sunday: West Edmonton Mall or Elk Island, then the return to YEG with at least 90 minutes before a domestic departure.
