Saint John to Fundy National Park by private car: a day built around the tide

Fundy National Park sits on New Brunswick's southeast coast, beside the village of Alma on Highway 114. It exists because of the Bay of Fundy's tides, and everything you do there is organized around them. Parks Canada says the park's tides "can be experienced in a day", although many visitors stay longer at one of five campgrounds or in Alma itself. For passengers stepping off a cruise ship or landing at Saint John airport, a Saint John to Fundy National Park car service is the simplest way to put a few hours at the water's edge into a schedule that leaves little slack.

This guide is for people about to book, and for anyone who simply wants to plan well. It explains the tide at Alma Beach, the park's best short walks, the covered-bridge closure that affects Point Wolfe in 2026, and what a private car costs from the cruise port. All fares are ranges in Canadian dollars, listed with the distance and drive time of each trip. Entering your exact address in the booker produces the firm all-in price.

What time should you visit Alma Beach for the tide?

Fundy coastline at low tide
Fundy coastline at low tide

Visit around low tide to walk the exposed mud flats, then stay to watch the water return. Parks Canada says the tide at Alma can rise 12 metres or more. Check official tide times for your date and arrive at least an hour before low tide.

Parks Canada's Alma Beach page describes walking on the mud flats at low tide and a short boardwalk of about 100 metres each way, wheelchair accessible and about ten minutes' walk. The page does not include tide times or safety wording about the incoming water, so use Canadian tide tables from Fisheries and Oceans Canada for the day, and stay aware of the incoming tide, which moves faster than most people expect. Other sources give higher maximum ranges for the bay as a whole, but 12 metres is the figure Parks Canada gives for Alma.

The tide shifts roughly an hour later each day, so a trip on one date has a very different rhythm from the same trip a week later. If you are on a ship timetable, build the day around the tide rather than the other way round.

A few habits make the flats safer and more enjoyable. Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy, because the surface is soft and slippery. Stay within easy walking distance of the shore and keep children beside you, since the water returns over a wide, flat area and can cut off a route back faster than it looks from the beach. Look behind you often, and leave the flats as soon as the water starts to move in. If park staff or signs give different advice on the day, follow them, because local conditions override any general guide.

Saint John to Alma: distance, drive time and price ranges

Parks Canada gives drive times of about 1.5 hours from Saint John, one hour from Moncton and about two hours from Fredericton. Route planners put Saint John city centre to Alma at roughly 140 km, though other sources quote shorter figures to the park's own entrance. From Saint John, the route follows Highway 1 east to exit 211 and then Route 114.

VehicleSeats and bagsSaint John to Alma (about 140 km, 1.5 to 2 hours)
Executive Sedan3 passengers, 2 large + 2 carry-on$650–$775
Luxury SUV6 passengers, 5–6 large bags$820–$985
Executive Sprinter12–14 passengers, 12+ bags$1,155–$1,385

These are before tax, with gratuity at your discretion. A return trip with a few hours at the park is better priced as an hourly day charter: roughly $135–$165 an hour for a sedan, $175–$210 for an SUV and $240–$295 for a Sprinter, with a two-hour minimum on cars and three hours on the Sprinter. Seven hours in a sedan is roughly $945–$1,155 before tax, and in an SUV $1,225–$1,470.

Read the Saint John cruise port page for terminal pickup detail and the rate card for the full list. The route is a Maritime drive with two-lane stretches, so times are estimates, and the booker uses live addresses.

Waterfalls and short walks

Fundy has more than 25 waterfalls by one reference count, and two are within easy reach of a short visit.

  • Dickson Falls: Parks Canada lists a 1.5 km loop of 30 to 45 minutes, with a boardwalk and stairs. It starts at a lookout over the bay.
  • Laverty Falls: 2.5 km each way, about one to one and a half hours, a curtain waterfall with a swimming hole. Access is via a gravel road, and one guide notes the Laverty Auto Trail is usually in good shape for cars.

A cruise passenger with five hours between the tide and the ship will manage Alma Beach and Dickson Falls, and probably nothing more. A visitor with a full day can add Laverty Falls. The Laverty walk is long enough that you should check the weather and carry water. Waterfalls are at their fullest after rain and in spring, and thinner after a dry spell, so the same walk can look quite different from one visit to the next. Boardwalk and stairs on the Dickson Falls loop can be slick when wet, and the gravel road to Laverty can change after heavy rain, so ask at the park if you are unsure.

The Point Wolfe Covered Bridge closure

This is the most important 2026 notice for Fundy visitors. Parks Canada says the Point Wolfe Covered Bridge is closed from 8 September until December 2026 for repairs, which affects access to Point Wolfe facilities. The park describes itself as the only national park in Canada where you can pass through a covered bridge. Vehicles using it are limited to 7.3 m in length and 4.4 m in height.

If your plan includes Point Wolfe, check the Fundy National Park visit page before you leave, because the closure is on the front page and alternate routes are listed for backcountry hikers. For most short visits, Alma Beach, Dickson Falls and Laverty Falls are not affected.

Alma: lunch and the village

Alma is a small fishing village at the park's edge, and it is the natural place to eat. Parks Canada suggests it, along with the park's five campgrounds, as a place to stay longer. Midday in summer can be busy, so ask your driver to suggest an arrival time that avoids the worst of the rush, or choose a late lunch.

Do not expect public transit. Parks Canada states that no public transit goes directly to the park, and that the nearest bus terminals are in Sussex and Moncton. That makes a rental car, a tour or a private car the realistic options.

Fees, season and passes

The Parks Canada page said that admission was free and camping 25% off from 19 June to 7 September 2026. Regular fees resumed on 8 September. The daily rate is on the park's fees page. The Discovery Pass is $83.50 for an adult, $71.50 for a senior and $167.50 for a family or group, and youth are free. If you are visiting the Maritimes for several days and plan to see more than one national park, the pass pays for itself quickly.

The park is open year-round, but services vary with the season, and some trails close in winter or spring. Ask the park for current trail conditions before you plan a long walk.

A cruise-day plan from Saint John

  1. On arrival, at the terminal: Meet your driver as soon as you clear the gangway. Confirm the ship's all-aboard time.
  2. About 1.5 to 2 hours later, Alma: Reach the village, with time for the Alma Beach boardwalk if the tide suits.
  3. Midday, Dickson Falls: The 1.5 km loop, 30 to 45 minutes.
  4. Early afternoon, lunch in Alma: A quick meal.
  5. Mid-afternoon, return: Allow two hours and a buffer of at least one hour before the ship's departure.

A shore excursion run by the cruise line or an independent tour company usually looks similar and costs per seat. For a small party it can be the better deal. For a family or a group of six it is often cheaper to split a private SUV, and you control the return time. If the ship timetable does not work, choose a closer excursion. A wider view of the area appears in our Hopewell Rocks guide, which covers the tidal flats farther along the same coast.

Weather and what to wear

The bay creates its own fog and wind. Dress in layers, with a waterproof jacket and shoes that handle wet boardwalk and mud. Pack a change of socks if you plan to step onto the flats, and keep your phone and keys in a dry pocket. In spring and autumn, a hat and gloves are useful on the exposed shoreline.

Combining Fundy with Halifax and Cape Breton

Fundy fits easily into a longer Maritimes plan. Our Cape Breton Highlands guide covers the island park at the other end of Nova Scotia, and the Cabot Trail guide covers the loop around it. The Halifax airport page explains pickups if you start your trip in Nova Scotia and cross into New Brunswick by road.
