A Kejimkujik National Park car service solves a simple problem: the park is a long way from Halifax's airport, the road in is rural, and the best way to enjoy a paddle or a night under the stars is not to be the person who has to drive afterwards. The Parks Canada directions page puts the inland park 167 km from Halifax, about two hours and five minutes, and 197 km from Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ). A chauffeured Executive Sedan from the airport is $915–$1,095 before tax.

Known locally as Keji, the park and national historic site also includes a separate coastal unit, Kejimkujik Seaside, about 99 km away by road. Dates, distances and fees follow the Parks Canada Kejimkujik pages as of early October 2026.

Is Kejimkujik National Park worth the drive from Halifax?

Yes, if you want a quiet lake landscape, Mi'kmaw heritage and one of the darkest skies in the Maritimes. Keji is 167 km and about two hours from Halifax, with canoe routes used by the Mi'kmaq for thousands of years and a separate Atlantic coast at Kejimkujik Seaside. A chauffeur makes the rural drive part of a relaxed day.

Kejimkujik is in southwest Nova Scotia, with its main address at 3005 Main Parkway, Maitland Bridge. Parks Canada calls it a national park and a national historic site, and a Parks Canada visitor guide describes it as the only Canadian national park designated a national historic site in its entirety. The reason is the cultural landscape. The park's waters were travelled by the Mi'kmaq for thousands of years, and Parks Canada lists guided Mi'kmaw petroglyph tours among its experiences.

A day trip is possible, but an overnight stay lets you add a canoe morning and a stargazing night.

Two parks in one: inland Keji and Kejimkujik Seaside

Parks Canada treats the two units as separate destinations. The inland park, around Kejimkujik Lake, is about canoeing, cycling, hiking, camping and cultural programs. Kejimkujik Seaside, at 1188 St Catherines River Road, Port Joli, is a coastal unit of white sand beaches, turquoise water and lagoons, with four lookouts and two trails, a picnic shelter and parking. Dogs are allowed on a leash at the Seaside.

Inland park–99 km, about 1 hr 14 min

Parks Canada bases those times on an average speed of 80 km/h. The Seaside is open year-round, while most inland services follow a seasonal calendar.

Mi'kmaw heritage, petroglyphs and canoe routes

The park lies in Mi'kmaw territory and is known for petroglyphs, habitation sites and canoe routes. Parks Canada lists guided petroglyph tours and says the park offers passes for Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia, so check the fees page if that applies to you. Check availability and book a guided tour ahead of your visit.

Paddling is the main activity. The inland park's canoe routes follow historic travel corridors, and Parks Canada reports that, as of 2026, motorized watercraft are prohibited except with written authorization from the Superintendent for park administration. Rentals are run by Whynot Adventure, The Keji Outfitters, at Jake's Landing, which Parks Canada lists as open from 15 May to 12 October 2026 and recommends reserving online at least 24 hours ahead.

A Dark Sky Preserve

Parks Canada describes Kejimkujik as Nova Scotia's only dark sky preserve and invites visitors to stay overnight to stargaze. For a chauffeured trip that means the return drive would happen after dark on rural roads, so plan to stay overnight or arrange a late collection. Parks Canada lists camping from mid-May to October, with online reservations, and options that include backcountry sites, Jeremy's Bay Campground, oTENTik tents and rustic cabins. The Visitor Centre and the main facilities close at the end of October, but the park remains open for hiking, snowshoeing and stargazing, weather permitting, from November to mid-May with limited services.

When to go: the 2026 calendar

Parks Canada's hours page for 2026 lists:

  • Visitor Centre: 15 May to 31 October, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily.
  • Whynot Adventure, The Keji Outfitters (Jake's Landing): 15 May to 12 October.
  • Campgrounds: from the Victoria Day weekend to 30 October.
  • Lakeview Café & Eatery: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 12 October.
  • By the Mersey gift shop: daily or weekends depending on the week, to 31 October.
  • Kejimkujik Seaside: open year-round, no specific hours listed.

July and August are the full-service months. Early autumn is quieter, and if you are reading this after 12 October you are in the stretch when rentals and the café have closed but the Visitor Centre and campgrounds are open for a few more weeks. Check the hours page before you travel.

Daily admission, per the Parks Canada fees page, is $7.25 for an adult aged 18 to 64, $6.25 for a senior, free for youth aged 6 to 17, and $15.00 for a family or group of up to seven in one vehicle. An adult Discovery Pass costs $83.50. Park fees are separate from our fare.

A suggested day, step by step

Parks Canada's 2026 hours make a workable running order for a long autumn or summer day. Adjust the timings to your own date.

Highway leading into the Rocky Mountains
Highway leading into the Rocky Mountains
  1. Pickup in Halifax or at YHZ, around 7 am. The drive takes about two hours, so you reach the park as the Visitor Centre opens at 8:30 am.
  2. Visitor Centre. Pay the daily fee, collect a map and ask about guided petroglyph tours. The centre's number is on the Parks Canada site if you need to confirm a tour.
  3. Jake's Landing. Collect a canoe or kayak from Whynot Adventure, The Keji Outfitters, if you have reserved. Parks Canada recommends booking online at least 24 hours ahead.
  4. Lunch. The Lakeview Café & Eatery opens Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 12 October in 2026, and the By the Mersey gift shop keeps seasonal hours. Pack lunch if your date falls outside those windows.
  5. Afternoon: lakeshore walk or cycling. Parks Canada lists biking as an activity for all age groups, plus fatbiking and mountain biking.
  6. Late afternoon: depart or continue to the Seaside. The Seaside is 99 km and about 1 hour 14 minutes from the inland park, so it needs its own half-day.

A full day on an hourly sedan booking of nine hours is about $1,215–$1,485 at the $135–$165 rate, and the booker adds the drive times. For an overnight stay, book the outbound transfer and the return separately and the car does not need to wait.

Executive Sprinter12 to 14 passengers, 12+ bagsabout 197 km from YHZ, 2 to 2.5 hours$1,625–$1,950

From downtown Halifax at 167 km, a sedan is $775–$925, an SUV is $975–$1,175 and a Sprinter is $1,380–$1,655. To the Seaside from Halifax, 180 km, a sedan is $835–$1,000 and an SUV is $1,055–$1,270. Between the inland park and the Seaside, 99 km, a sedan is $460–$550. All of them come from the per-kilometre transfer rates, with the full rate card on the rates page; tax and gratuity are extra.

Your driver tracks the flight. The free wait after landing at Halifax Stanfield is 30 minutes on domestic flights and 60 minutes on international ones. The online booker returns the exact all-in fare for your pickup and drop-off address.

Cruise passengers: a Keji day from Halifax

If you are on a cruise that docks at Pier 21, a Kejimkujik day trip is possible but long: about 167 km and just over two hours each way by Parks Canada's figures, which leaves little time inside the park on a standard port day. Check the all-aboard time first, and consider the shorter alternatives in our Peggy's Cove guide if the schedule is tight. For an overnight stay before or after a sailing, Keji works well.

Parking at the Visitor Centre, Jake's Landing and the Seaside

Drive to the Visitor Centre first to pay the fee and pick up a map, then to Jake's Landing for paddling. At the Seaside, use the parking area and the signed trails and lookouts. Dogs must be on a leash at the Seaside, per Parks Canada.

Combining Keji with Halifax and the South Shore

Keji works best as part of a longer Nova Scotia loop. Our Halifax weekend guide covers the city. The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove is described in our Peggy's Cove guide, and for travellers continuing north, the Cabot Trail guide and Fundy National Park guide cover the other major drives. Parks Canada lists Liverpool as 80 km, about one hour, from the inland park, which makes it a convenient South Shore base.

Families and groups heading to Keji

With four people and bags, choose the Luxury SUV, as the sedan carries three. Child seats incur no charge when requested in advance. A group of ten to fourteen can use an Executive Sprinter, and the fleet page shows larger vehicles for hourly charters. Mention any mobility needs at booking so the drop-off point is the one closest to the level path.

Coastal and lake weather: what to pack

Conditions on the Atlantic coast at the Seaside can differ from the lake interior, so pack layers, a waterproof jacket, insect repellent in the warm months and sturdy shoes. For stargazing, bring warm clothing and a blanket, since temperatures fall after dark.

Honest alternatives: the Parkbus day trip or self-drive

Parks Canada says Parkbus runs day trips from Halifax on select dates to both the inland park and the Seaside. Check Parkbus for current dates and fares. If you have a car and plan to move around the park, self-driving is cheaper.

OptionTypical costTime from HalifaxBest for
Parkbus day trip (Parks Canada lists it)Fare set by the operator; check datesOperator's scheduleSolo travellers and couples without a car
Rental car, self-driveRental, fuel and park fee; varies by seasonAbout 2 hours each wayIndependent travellers staying several days

Executive Sprinter from YHZ$1,625–$1,950 (197 km)2 to 2.5 hoursGroups of 12 to 14

If a Parkbus date matches your plans, it is the cheaper choice for a day visit. The chauffeured car is better for a late arrival, a one-way journey with an overnight stay, or a party that shares the fare.
