Point Pelee National Park by private car: a small park with a long list of reasons

Point Pelee National Park is the most southern point of mainland Canada, in the Carolinian zone of Lake Erie's north shore. Parks Canada calls it the country's second smallest and most ecologically diverse national park. It is small enough to see in a day, yet it draws about 300,000 visitors a year, largely because of its migrating birds, its autumn monarch butterflies and the walk out to the Tip, where the land narrows into the lake.

Reaching it is the harder part. The park is about 65 km from Windsor, 180 km from London and 355 km from Toronto, and Parks Canada's plan-your-visit page confirms that no public transit serves it. A Windsor or Toronto chauffeured transfer is therefore a practical way to arrive, and a good fit for birders who start before dawn. This guide explains the fees, the seasons, the shuttle, the access works on Seacliff Drive and the price of each approach. Each fare is a range in Canadian dollars, paired with a distance and a drive time, and the booker gives the final all-in amount.

When is spring bird migration at Point Pelee?

A warbler during spring migration
A warbler during spring migration

Spring migration is celebrated each May at the park's Festival of Birds, which ran from 1 to 18 May in 2026. Exact festival dates change every year, and the festival site did not state when migration peaks, so check festivalofbirds.ca for 2027 dates before booking.

The Festival of Birds is run by the Friends of Point Pelee and the national park to celebrate spring migration. It includes guided birding hikes, programs on savannah restoration and a 100 Species Challenge. The park's own page records more than 390 species of birds, and says visitors can glimpse rare species during spring and fall migration.

We cannot tell you the peak day, and neither can anyone months ahead, because migration follows weather. Be a considerate birder: stay on marked paths, keep voices low near feeding areas, and follow any closures posted by the park, which exist to protect nesting and resting birds. The practical plan is to book a flexible vehicle, watch the forecast and local birding reports the week before, and keep your hotel on the Leamington side. Early mornings matter most for birds, which is where a driver who is awake and fresh makes a difference.

Autumn: monarch days and dark sky nights

Parks Canada says monarch butterflies visit temporarily on a few special days each autumn. Because the date is not fixed, the park is the place to check. It also lists Dark Sky Nights for night-time exploration. With today being 8 October, both belong to the current season, and the park's calendar of events is the authoritative source for what is on.

Because monarch days are announced by the park rather than fixed on a calendar, treat any monarch visit as a flexible plan. Book your transfer with enough notice that a change of day stays free, and watch the park's announcements in the days before. If the butterflies arrive on a weekday, the park may be quieter, which makes parking and the shuttle easier. The park is open from 7 a.m. to dusk daily. That makes sunrise arrivals possible and evening visits short in late autumn.

Distance, drive time and price ranges

Parks Canada gives the distances: about 65 km from Windsor, 180 km from London and 355 km from Toronto. From the east, take Highway 401 to exit 48, then Highway 77 and local roads to Point Pelee Drive. From the west, take Highway 3 east toward Leamington. Drive times are our estimates for a normal day.

Toronto to Point Pelee355 km, about 4 hours$1,650–$1,970$2,075–$2,505$2,930–$3,515

These figures are before tax, with gratuity at your discretion. Windsor International is one of the park's nearest airports along with Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County and Toronto Pearson. We have not confirmed an official airport-to-park distance for Windsor, so the booker prices that run from your exact address. See the airport limo page for how pickups work, the Pearson airport limo page for Toronto, and the rate card for the hourly option.

Choosing a gateway: Windsor, Detroit or Toronto

Parks Canada names three airports near the park: Windsor International, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County and Toronto Pearson. Windsor is the closest to the park at about 65 km to the city, and it suits a short stay. Pearson suits travellers who are already in the Toronto area, though the 355 km approach is long enough that an overnight in Leamington often makes the trip easier. Detroit Metropolitan is a cross-border option, and border formalities and documents are your responsibility, so do not plan a tight connection around a land crossing.

Whichever you choose, put your flight number in the booker so we can track it, and allow extra time for customs if you arrive on an international flight.

Seacliff Drive East roadworks

The Point Pelee park page reports that the Seacliff Drive East reconstruction project affects access to the park and is currently scheduled until the fall of 2026. It directs visitors to the Municipality of Leamington's website for updates. A chauffeur checks the detour before leaving, but allow extra time on your first approach, and download directions in case coverage is weak.

If the roadworks end as scheduled, access should be simpler by 2027. We would still check before every trip, because project dates move.

Fees in 2026

Regular fees resumed on 8 September 2026, after free admission ended on 7 September. According to the Parks Canada fees page for Point Pelee, daily admission from April to October is $10.00 for an adult, $8.75 for a senior and $19.50 for a family or group. Youth are free. From November to March, an adult pays $7.75, a senior $6.75 and a family or group $15.00.

The Discovery Pass is $83.50 for an adult, $71.50 for a senior and $167.50 for a family or group. Online reservations, modifications or cancellations cost $11.50, and by phone $13.50. The page does not list a shuttle fare or a general parking fee, so confirm those with the park. If you plan to stay inside the park, an oTENTik cabin at Camp Henry is $147.50 for one night, which includes parking for one vehicle in the camp parking area but not the entry fee. Cabins are available year-round, so they suit a pre-dawn start in spring or a quiet autumn night.

The Tip, the shuttle and the Marsh Boardwalk

Parks Canada suggests planning a full day. Options include walking the Marsh Boardwalk, canoeing in the marsh for about an hour, the Botham Tree Trail (one to two hours), a round-trip shuttle to the Tip (about an hour), or a picnic and swim at the beach. There are more than 12 km of hiking, walking and cycling trails and a roadway of about 9 km for cycling.

The shuttle to the Tip is the way most visitors reach the southernmost point. The park's shuttle page did not load when we checked, so confirm its season, schedule and cost with Parks Canada before you rely on it. A driver can park, wait or collect you at the visitor centre, which sits at 1118 Point Pelee Drive.

A practical day plan

  1. Early morning, Leamington or Windsor: Pickup timed for the 7 a.m. opening.
  2. Early morning, birding: Walk a trail or the boardwalk when birds are most active.
  3. Mid-morning, shuttle to the Tip: About an hour round trip.
  4. Midday, picnic and beach: Use the picnic areas or the visitor centre.
  5. Early afternoon, Botham Tree Trail or canoe: One to two hours for the trail, or about an hour on the water.
  6. Late afternoon: Leave before dusk if the roads are unfamiliar.

For a day of this kind, the hourly rate is clearest: $135–$165 for a sedan, $175–$210 for an SUV and $240–$295 for a Sprinter, with a two-hour minimum on cars and three hours on the Sprinter. An eight-hour day from Windsor is roughly $1,080–$1,320 in a sedan or $1,400–$1,680 in an SUV before tax, with the 65 km approach each way included in the clock.

Combining Point Pelee with Toronto and the rest of Ontario

Toronto is the main gateway for long approaches, and our Toronto luxury weekend guide covers the city before you set out. On the same trip you could visit the Bruce Peninsula and Tobermory or head north to Algonquin Provincial Park, though each of those is its own long day.

Overnight options help. The park offers oTENTik A-frame cabins at Camp Henry year-round, and the nearby town of Leamington has other accommodation. An overnight stay lets you catch a sunrise and sunset in the same visit.

Weather and what to wear

The park sits on the lake, so wind is usual and can be strong. Bring layers, a windproof jacket, a hat and sunglasses. Bugs can be bothersome near the marsh in warm weather, so carry repellent. Footwear should handle sand, damp boardwalk and gravel. In late autumn, dress for a cold wind off the water.

Point Pelee by rental car, tour or private car: an honest comparison

Public transit does not serve the park. Trains and buses stop at Windsor and Chatham, and boats can reach Leamington Marina, where a taxi is available, according to Parks Canada.
