Fogo Island Inn is one of the few luxury hotels in Canada where the journey is part of the stay, and a Fogo Island Inn transfer is really three stages: an airport, a long coastal road and a ferry. LimousineCanada.ca can carry you through the first two stages by pre-booked car, from Gander International Airport to the Farewell ferry terminal, and we will tell you plainly where another option is simpler.

LimousineCanada.ca is a separate chauffeured-transport business, not affiliated with the inn, with Shorefast or with the provincial ferry service, and none of this is an endorsement by any of them. Most of what we say about the inn comes from the pages it publishes about getting there, its rates and its questions and answers.

Fogo Island Inn car service: the three stages of the journey

The inn sits on Fogo Island, off the northeast coast of Newfoundland, in the community of Joe Batt's Arm. It has no street address in the usual sense, and the inn's own pages describe the trip in stages rather than as one drive. You fly into Gander (YQX) or St. John's (YYT), drive to the Farewell ferry terminal, then cross Hamilton Sound to the island.

For a guest, the useful question is which stage you want help with. A chauffeur covers the road from the airport to Farewell. The ferry is operated by the provincial government, and the final run across the island belongs to the inn's own arrangements. Our job is to make the first stage frictionless, with a vehicle sized for your luggage and a driver who knows that the last sailing of the day matters more than the clock on the dashboard.

How do you get from Gander airport to Fogo Island Inn?

The rugged Newfoundland coast
The rugged Newfoundland coast

Fly to Gander, drive about an hour to ninety minutes to the Farewell ferry terminal, then take the roughly 45-minute ferry to Fogo Island and continue by road to the inn. The inn also offers a round-trip chauffeured shuttle from Gander for one to four people, listed at $1,150.

The inn's getting-here page describes the drive from Gander as about one hour through coastal towns. Its frequently asked questions give about 1.5 hours. We plan on the longer figure for scheduling and treat one hour as the best case, which matters if you are working back from a sailing time.

The inn's own information puts the island leg, after the ferry lands, at roughly half an hour in a 2018 guest itinerary. Added up, the stages take about two and a quarter to two and three-quarter hours before any wait for the boat. Our Newfoundland and Labrador airports guide covers St. John's for guests who arrive there instead.

Gander to Farewell: distance, timing and fares

The distance from Gander International Airport to the Farewell terminal is quoted at roughly 85 to 105 km, depending on which source you read and where it measures from. We price both ends of that range so the figure you see is honest, then the booker gives the exact amount for your pickup.

LegDistanceTypical driveExecutive Sedan (3 pax)Luxury SUV (6 pax)Executive Sprinter (12–14)
Gander airport to Farewell ferryabout 85–105 km1 h to 1 h 30$395–$585$495–$740$700–$1,040

These ranges cover road kilometres from the airport to the ferry terminal only. Ferry fares are set by the provincial ferry service, not by us, and the booker shows how any extra time is handled. For flights tracked on arrival, we wait 30 minutes free on a domestic landing and 60 minutes on an international one, which is more than enough for a bag claim at a small airport.

A name-board meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on of $100–$150, and child seats are free if you ask when you book. The inn welcomes children aged eight and older, so most family bookings need a booster rather than a car seat. Our fleet page shows the vehicles that cover that range.

The Farewell ferry: crossing time, timetable and the wait

The Fogo Island, Change Islands and Farewell service is run by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its page lists Farewell to Fogo Island as 13 km on the water, 45 minutes on the direct sailing and 1 hour 15 minutes on the combined route that calls at Change Islands. Farewell to Change Islands is 6 km, about 20 minutes. The MV Veteran carries 64 vehicles and 200 passengers.

The page we read showed the Modified Two Vessel Summer Schedule in effect, which will have changed by the time you travel. We deliberately do not print sailing times here, because they differ by season and the province posts live updates on 511nl.ca. What we do advise is simple: arrive at the terminal well ahead of your sailing, check the posted schedule on the morning you travel, and have the inn's own contact details ready in case a sailing is delayed.

If your flight lands mid-afternoon and the last boats of the day are close, ask us at booking to build the drive around the sailing instead of around your landing. We will track the flight and adjust the pickup window, but we cannot hold a ferry. In that situation an overnight in Gander and a morning crossing is a calmer plan, and we explain it in the next section.

What happens on the island side

Once the ferry lands, the last road to Joe Batt's Arm takes about half an hour by the inn's own estimate. Two arrangements work. In the first, your chauffeur crosses with you, so the same vehicle takes you to the inn's door. In the second, you travel as a foot passenger and the inn coordinates the island end.

We do not want to guess the inn's policy on foot passengers, so please ask the inn which arrangement it supports before you book. What the inn does publish is that its rate includes valet service with departure ferry coordination, and an on-island shuttle and guided excursions for stays, so your departure morning is also covered on its side.

If you cross in your own booked vehicle, the vehicle must be sized for everything on board, because there is no room for a second trip once you are on the boat. Our Executive Sprinter rental page covers larger groups.

What the inn includes, and what it leaves to you

The inn's rates page says the nightly price covers full-board meals, non-alcoholic drinks, a 24-hour room service menu, Wi-Fi, access to the cinema, gallery and hot tubs, guided outdoor excursions, bike use, an island orientation and an on-island shuttle. It also includes valet service with departure ferry coordination and a carbon offset for the stay, covering ground transportation.

It does not include alcohol, seasonal excursions, or transport to and from Fogo Island, and the rates are quoted before 15% HST. The minimum stay is three nights, and the inn recommends four. Suites sleep two to five guests, and solo travellers receive a reduction of $300 a night.

That list matters for transport because the one thing the nightly rate does not cover is the exact thing this page is about. Getting to Farewell is your responsibility, and the choice is between the inn's shuttle, a rental car and a pre-booked chauffeur.

The inn's shuttle versus a pre-booked car

The inn lists a round-trip chauffeured shuttle from and to Gander for one to four people at $1,150, though an older release quoted a lower figure, so confirm the current price. We think it is fair to put it beside our own ranges.

If you are two guests flying in and out on the same days, the inn's shuttle is the simplest single-booking product, and we would not talk you out of it. A pre-booked car makes sense when your party is larger than four, when your arrival and departure days differ, when you want a stop on the way or when you are collecting a group from different flights. Read our why LimousineCanada.ca page for the way we price and what the fare includes.

Flying in: Gander, St. John's and the charter option

The inn names Gander as its main gateway. Its getting-here page lists year-round connections from Halifax (about 1 h 40) and St. John's (about 45 minutes), and seasonal flights from Toronto (about 2 h 55) and Montréal (about 2 h 20). It also lists seasonal direct flights into Halifax from New York, Boston and Frankfurt, and into St. John's from London and Paris, which helps if you are coming from overseas.

Colourful row houses in St. John's, Newfoundland

For guests who prefer to skip the road and the ferry, the inn says charter planes and helicopters can land at the Fogo Island airstrip, with charters leaving from St. John's, Gander or Deer Lake. If you are arranging a charter, our private aviation page lists the terminals where we meet aircraft elsewhere in Canada. It is a larger decision, and not one for a car company to make for you.

Guests who fly into St. John's face a longer highway day to Gander, so most make an overnight of it. Our St. John's weekend guide suggests how to spend the evening, and the inn's rental car option works from either airport.

When the inn is open, and what that means in October

The inn's questions and answers say it typically operates from April 1 to November 1 each year, and point guests to an online calendar for exact dates. Because the season closes at the start of November, a late-October stay is a short window, so check availability before you plan it.

In autumn on the Newfoundland coast, expect fog, wind and shorter days. Marine crossings can be affected by weather, and the provincial service posts live information for that reason. We recommend a flexible plan, an early arrival at Farewell and a hotel night in Gander on either side of a tight international connection. If your return flight is the earliest of the day, tell the inn when you book so its valet can coordinate your departure ferry.

Art, architecture and the Shorefast story

The inn is known as much for its design as for its views. Todd Saunders, an architect who grew up in nearby Gander, designed it, and it opened in 2013. It stands on stilts at the edge of the rocky coast, and its 29 rooms and suites each look out over the North Atlantic. Shorefast, a registered charity established in 2003, reinvests earnings from the inn into the community.

Guests tend to come for the quiet, the food and the island's craft traditions rather than a packed itinerary. The inn describes its rates as full-board, with most land-based excursions and activities included, so there is little reason to hire a car once you have arrived. We would not suggest booking a driver for days on the island.

Weddings, groups and private events

The pages we read do not list weddings or events as a service. With 29 rooms and a three-night minimum, a large group stay is something to arrange directly with the inn. For travellers who have arranged a group stay, the transport question is the Gander leg, and an Executive Sprinter with 12 to 14 seats removes the need for several cars. Our travel desk can coordinate several flights landing at different times.

Gift trips and anniversaries are more common than weddings at a property of this size. Because the inn welcomes children aged eight and older and is not pet-friendly, it suits adult couples and older families. Service animals with proper documentation are the exception it describes.

Luggage, vehicles and booking

Match the vehicle to the luggage. A sedan takes three passengers, two large bags and two carry-ons. The Luxury SUV takes six passengers with five to six large bags and suits a family or two couples. The Sprinter carries 12 to 14 and over a dozen bags.

On cancellation, we use a sliding scale measured from the scheduled pickup time. More than 72 hours: no charge. Within 72 hours: 10%. Within 48 hours: 50%. Within 24 hours, or a no-show: 100%. Pricing is exclusive of tax, tolls and gratuity, and the booker confirms the exact all-in figure for your address.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Gander airport from the Fogo Island ferry?

Between roughly 85 and 105 km depending on the source, which takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The inn's getting-here page says about one hour and its questions and answers say about 1.5 hours, so we plan on the longer time.

How much is a car from Gander airport to Farewell?

A sedan is about $395–$585, an SUV about $495–$740 and an Executive Sprinter about $700–$1,040 one way before tax. The booker returns the exact figure. Ferry fares are separate and set by the province.

Does Fogo Island Inn offer its own transfer?

Yes. Its getting-here page lists a round-trip chauffeured shuttle from and to Gander for one to four people at $1,150. Confirm the current price with the inn, since a prior release quoted less.

How long is the ferry to Fogo Island?

The provincial page lists 45 minutes on the direct sailing from Farewell, and 1 hour 15 minutes when the boat also calls at Change Islands. The crossing is 13 km.

Is the inn open all year?

Its questions and answers say it typically runs from April 1 to November 1, with an online calendar for exact dates. Check availability before planning a late-season trip.

Can I arrive by private aircraft?

The inn says charter planes and helicopters can land at the Fogo Island airstrip, flying from St. John's, Gander or Deer Lake. Arrangements go through its guest advisors.

Can your driver take me across on the ferry?

We can plan the journey either with the vehicle crossing or with you as a foot passenger, depending on what the inn supports on the island side. The booker and a confirmation message will state which one applies to your booking.

Can children and pets come?

The inn welcomes children aged eight and older, and says it is not pet-friendly apart from documented service animals.

Is LimousineCanada.ca affiliated with Fogo Island Inn?

No. We are an independent company, and this guide is written for travellers who have already chosen the inn.
